You need a blackberry data plan to use BBM. Then it will work off wi-fi, but unsure if it will work off wi-fi without the sim card.

I use BBM all the time over WiFi. You do need a BB data plan in order to use BBM to start with.

That wasn't the question origianlly asked.Yes you DO need data plan and NO It won't work w/o simm in but why would you want to?

You need the SIM card for the BB to make contact with RIM's servers and recognize the BB data plan. So without a SIM card, you CANNOT use BBM over WiFi.
