Default 8130 Charging problem

Please Login to Remove!

I few days ago I noticed that my phone seemed to be charging very slowly (only a 50% charge after being plugged in overnight). I tried a different charger with the same results. I was thinking about buying another battery to see if the battery was the cause. But today I tried plugging it in to my pc and it could not be recognized. So now i'm thinking the mini usb connector could be damaged. Anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this issue more?

Welcome to BlackBerry Forums!

First thing to do - have you tried popping the battery out and in (with it disconnected from any USB cables)?

Yup, that was the first thing I tried.

You will know if the USB is damaged as the charging symbol will not appear on the main screen near the battery. Try both on the computer and a wall charger. Does it show charging?

Yes it is charging, just very slowly. So 10 hours of charging only got it up to 90%.

Are you now charging on a USB to PC connection? Without the proper drivers loaded on the PC (via Desktop Manager) you won't get the USB ports properly powered for charging.

Two items to investigate.

One is the battery's contacts - pull it from the case - use a Q-tip wet with alcohol to clean both the contacts on the battery and those in the phone to which it connects - make sure everything is dry (pretty quick) before reinserting - also before reinserting, visually check (using a good bright light and, if you like, a magnifier) for signs of pitting or corrosion on those contacts, for signs of the inside contacts having moved out of place and for signs of anything conductive falling across (bridging) those contacts.

The other is the charger's output. A standard USB port offers 5V at a 500mA but a BB is happier with 700-800mA - if your main charger is failing and your second charger is not quite up to spec (I've seen them at 200-400mA), you're starving the battery.

That would be consistent with slow charging. So might a bad battery, but if you have an 8130 your battery can't be terribly old.

Is it an OEM battery directly from RIM? There have been many reports of third-party batteries exhibiting different failure modes (some of them dangerous). I believe - not positive/haven't confirmed - that recent handsets check the battery for an electronic RIM-branded thumbprint and slow down the charging rate as a measure of protection.

While I can't anticipate any technology Verizon might have introduced to interfere with your battery charging, I really just don't like that company and would be delighted to be able to balme them for this.

Ok so I tried cleaning off the contacts and the chargers i'm using are 700ma. Also, this is the original battery but the phone is only about 9 months old. I'm going to try connecting to another pc tomorrow to see if it will connect. I'll let you guys know what happens. I really don't want to have to deal with doing a warranty replacement for the phone. But I think it is looking like it isnt the battery.

I borrowed a brand new battery from someone and I had the same results. So it looks like my phone is busted. I just noticed that it looks like a pin could be missing in the mini-usb connector. Can someone check their phone and let me know what the connector looks like? From left to right, i see 3 pins then it skips a space and then there is 1 more.

Default I have 5 pins on my 8130 USB

You appear to be missing one pin.

Default Not recognized device

My wife had a similar problem. Her Pearl would not charge on the car charger. I plugged it into the computer and it did not recognize the device as a blackberry device. I took out the battery a couple of times, but it still did not recognize the device. The phone did charge with the wall charger. I plugged it into a different computer, and it also did not recognize the device.

I took out the battery again, and this time it recognized the device and fully charged the battery. She plugged in the phone to the computer last night, and again the message popped up that the device was not recognized again. The latest destop manger is installed on the computer. Any suggestions?

I'd say backup and wipe the device.

There is a good possibility that the connector on the phone is going bad. Loose or missing pins. Especially if the problem travels from one computer to another, and the wall charger also.

Of course he needs to get the BB recognized again by the PC, first .

@ 503Mojo52 -- First off, I would reboot the PC (unplug the USB cable from the BB first), and remove the Battery from the BB, replace it and allow the BB to reboot again.

Then try connecting via USB to the PC, again. Good luck.

Thanks for the input; I was able to back up the device the last time I got the computer to recognize it. In fact, I upgraded the software so the device was wiped clean, upgraded and the back up reinstalled. However as mentioned the problem remains.

I too think it is the USB connector, and have conntacted the vendor for warranty replacement. I'll let you know what happens.

Just to bring this issue to a conclusion, I received the new phone, plugged it in and everything worked fine. it appears the issue was the usb connection on the phone.

Glad you got a replacement

FYI: I went through three (3!!!) 8130's from Bell that all just stopped charging and had no USB connectivity. I dismantled the first two hoping I'd find a broker solder joint on the USB connector but that was not the case. Bell replaced them (each time) under warrantly but I was very surprised to have three 8130's have the same charging/USB problem in the course of 7 months The latest replacement has been fine since late July so lets see if it lasts...
