When i had my first blackberry im sure when teathered as a modem to my laptop i used to be able to continue to use the phone, would receive emails and be able to chat on msn bbm etc etc, but on my 9700 and 9800 it goes to "modem mode" and in this seems to render the phone useless..

Any advantages to this im missing that make it worth the sacrifice? if not why the change?? is there a way around this?

You dont say how your tethering the BB but if using bluetooth some functions are not available.

I tether all the time and it works like a charm. I use the phone and surf with no problems...I use a usb to tether, though.

I am on bluetooth connection yeah, but thats all i used with my curve!!

I can't see any relevant parts in that linked docutment, but i may have missed it skim reading, but i can use the internet on the laptop fine, its the phone side that no longer works.. ie msn on the blackberry, bbm messages and emails etc..

my old curve never went to "modem mode" and i think that is the reason.. I dont see why they have changed it :( it... i will try with a usb but as far as i recall that switched to modem mode also when i tried it

I didn't even know BB's could do this. I used to use my corporate Pearl as a modem 4 yrs ago, but it was tethered and I couldn't have talked very long with my head on my laptop anyway...
