Default Blackberry 10 = Requires New Server Environment

Please Login to Remove!

After listening to RIM speak, the following items seem to be true:

- Blackberry 10 devices will not work on a current BES environment. They will need to be hosted on different servers (bes and sql) from the rest of the BES4/5/6/7 devices. There is no upgrade plan by RIM to a unified server that hosts all BES OS devices up to OS10.

- Playbook 2.0 (without using BB Bridge) will also be hosted in the new/separate environment

==
I'm surprised that a new environment will be required for any user that receives a BB10 device, and I wonder if corporations will have this in place by the time it is released. I see a lot of returned devices in the future
--
Has anyone seen something contradictory to the above?

If this is true, it's probably going to be one of the final few nails in RIM's coffin.

Sounds to me like RIM is shooting themselves in the foot with this announcement.

and anyone on server 2003 is SOL, as most of the code is written for a 2008 server environment only.

They keep going down the wrong road for some reason...amazing.
I wonder how many carriers will support this if a different BIS server is also required.

I could deal with requiring a new version of BES, even with needing Win 2008. But if the new BES only supports OS 10, requiring 2 BES servers, that is a deal breaker.

Is this the blurp you are referring to which was written a few days ago ? That mobile Fusion will be the Management system for all PB and OS10 devices?

What is the future of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server? Discussing the Mobile Device Management (MDM) Product Roadmap «Inside BlackBerry for Business Blog

I guess that there will be no need for a BIS service anymore, because the necessary tools are bult into the phone.
And (guess) there will be no need for a blackberry network infrastructure because this will be handled by the fusion software.

The article does not say, the blackerry system is dead, but it states between the words, that there will be no further updates to the current technology - which is the same as dead. The BES servers have to stay to support legacy devices and all new handhelds are managed my the mobile fusion Software.

For me that does not mean much, because I think i can just stay with what I have. But for anyone who constantly has to replace its phones it will be painful to further support the legacy blackberry devices.

That would mean that you could use a standard data plan to use BB devices. RIM would loose the subscription money, but on the other hand they wouldn't need to uphold the costly infrastructure.

I am pretty sure they will not sell any pre-OS10 devices in two years, so if your device breaks, you are forced to use the new stuff (or you try to get an old OS7 device from Ebay.)

AT&T still has 8520 for sale since Aug 2009. So maybe 3 years you can get one.

Unless you are talking about the activesync component of the Playbook 2.0, which is really just an alternative......As I understand it, the RIM infrastructure stays the same. They will still be dealing with carrier plans and routing traffic through their infrastructure.

IMO for Consumer Devices the routing of Email-Data and http pages through the RIM infrastructure does not make sense anymore. When everyone had GPRS it did. But now when everyone having HSPDA and 5GB/Month allowance, why compress the data. Takes more time to compress then delivery without compression.

For Enterprise data it still makes sense, otherwise you would need VPN to access the Company data.

A Clear Picture? Sorry, but I'm now more confused then ever. From reading this thread, I'm not the only one.

Notice how Alan referred to the BES in the past tense? "...known and loved..."

Darth, thought you were talking about me for a minute. All this will make for great discussion while sitting in High Velocity (or whatever it's called this year). Looking forward to discuss the roadmap with some RIM VPs at BBW.
