From my experience with both TMO and VZW, VZW are much easier to deal with when it comes to unlocking phones.

Probably. If you paid $200 and got the phone on a upgrade deal (or as a new customer) and you disconnect it from Verizon's service they'll probably charge you the $350 difference, and if you shut down your account they'll get you $175 more. That's so you don't get it for $200 and turn around and sell it on ebay.

1) Call Verizon, ask for blackberry global support, tell them you need the the unlock code to use a pre-paid sim card overseas, it is the truth for me.
2) With the VZW SIM inserted
3) Click on manage connections, select turn all connections off
4) Go to Settings Menu, Options, Advanced Options and then SIM Card.
5) Hit the menu button and select show keyboard
6) Type in mepd using the keyboard
7) Type in mep2 another screen pops up for the code,
8) Enter the code, remember you ONLY have 10 chances to get it right*
9) Press the enter key
10) A message will appear saying code accepted
11) Turn device off, remove VZW SIM card and pop any sim in
11) Turn the phone back on
12) Go to manage connections, select gsm and there you go
yo i did exactly word for word and they would not give me the unlock code, they kept saying i had to use there sim card and rim has not released ne unlock codes

That's true but the vzw Storm is capable of receiving both CDMA and GSM signals, one at a time of course.

I don't get it. If I could cancel while in the trial period with no penalty why would they charge me 175. I can see the 350 but not the 175. Actually I like the phone and I just want to keep it.

you can cancel within the 30 days but that also requires return of the equipment for most carriers otherwise they wont cancel the account

This is straight from VZWs contract/satisfaction aggrement.
Satisfaction Guarantee

"You may terminate service for any reason within 30 days of activation. If you purchased equipment from us at a promotional price at the time of activation, you must return that equipment to avoid being assessed a $175 Early Termination Fee. You will remain responsible for your Activation Fee unless you terminate service within 3 days of activation. You will also be responsible for all applicable usage fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges or other charges that accrued to your account through the termination date. A $35 restocking fee will apply if you exchange your device for a different model or color, or if you return your device and within three days purchase another one. If you paid a security deposit, it may take between 30 and 60 days to process the return of your security deposit. The charges for any service used on the account before the service termination date may be applied against your security deposit. "

Just buy the phone outright. Don't sign up for anything, just tell the reps you already have a VZW account and will activate it later when you get home. This way you'll pay the retail price ($549?) and walk out of the store with a phone.

This is what I did with my 8330 earlier this year, and what I was planning to do this weekend with the Storm, except the stores I went to were all sold out.

Right on. That's what many iPhone customers did when the g1 came out in 2007. They all sold at retail, remember ($599)? A lot never got connected to ATT, so with the G2 they wouldn't let you out of the store without connecting to ATT first. I don't know if Verizon will let you have one without connecting it first. Anyone?

Or, sign up for a new account and get the phone for $250, then go home, call and cancel and tell them you're not returning the phone and pay the $175 Early Terminination Fee. $425, instead of $550.

As already mentioned in this thread, you'd still have to pay full retail for the phone.

It was my understanding that if you cancel within the first 30 days you don't have to pay the $175 early term fee.. you would just have to pay for any charges (mins used etc).. and if you keep the device they charge you retail.. but I do not think you have to pay the $175 early term fee..

Well yea, EDGE is 2G, EV-DO is 3G. Of course EDGE will be slower.

I'm really surprised the 9530 works on North American GSM bands. They were pretty specific that the GSM radio would not have those bands.
