Question BB OS Version 5.0.0.586 vs. 5.0.0.714... thoughts/comparisons?

Please Login to Remove!

So, after nearly a year of using OS 5.0.0.714 on my T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700 (it's the version that came pre-installed on my phone) and growing increasingly dissatisfied with its various glitches (most notably that I get the "spinning clock face"/"hourglass" in the middle of the screen, indicating 100% CPU load/lock-up WAY too often and for way too long, plus it randomly locks me out of text messaging conversations, refusing to open the new message so I can read it) I finally stopped putting it off yesterday, and upgraded to T-Mobile's official release of OS 6.0 for the 9700. HATED IT! Too much of a memory hog, and it refused to let me use my custom MP3 ringtones that I've used not only with the 9700 on OS 5.0, but also with my 8900 Curve before it, and on my 8700g before that!

So, I rolled back to 5.0.0.714 last night, hoping that maybe the fresh install would solve the glitches... but it didn't. Same problems were right back. So, I've now taken the option of rolling my install back even FURTHER, to OS 5.0.0.586, which I've never used before! But I figure maybe it might be more stable, so its worth a shot.

So, umm... those of you that have used both, what are your thoughts on OS 5.0.0.586 versus 5.0.0.714? Which worked better for you? What kind of glitches did you experience with each?

Any feedback here would be helpful. And in case any of you are wondering, my preference has been to stick with the official OS releases put out through T-Mobile, as I have had nothing but bad experiences every time I've tried installing a non T-Mobile OS release.

I used the factory install of OS5 for like a year and a half. The only issues I had was the spinning hour glass, but that is really just because the device doesn't have a lot of memory and a slow processor. I don't think that device is worth the OS6 update. So, again, I really didnt have many issues with the factory install of OS5.

I just got a 9780 and sometimes I think even that device isn't ready for OS6. Just too underpowered.

Always use the latest OS version, in your case 5.0.0.1655/5.0.0.1014
which you can get here:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...a-english.html

OS6 on the 9700 Is / works fine, especially if you take 5 min to slim it all down. There are many tools out there that allow you to do this; all free and easy to use.

Right now, my 9700 has 36.6 MB of ram allocated, and another 28 MB free.
136 MB allocated ROM and 50 MB free.

I've still got over 20 apps installed, and this thing is just as fast as os 5, but looks better and has a much better browser.

After doing a through FS clean and Garbage collect (similar to a battery pull, without the 60 seconds of down time to boot up...)
ROM:136/50 - the amounts didn't change (they shouldn't really... but the amount of objects did... which should happen)

RAM: 35/29.2

This is with 4 -NON SYSTEM- apps idling in the background; killing them off gets me a lot more ram freed. Killing off the system apps would be stupid as i use them all the time.

tl;dr: always use the latest OS. OS6 works fine on the 9700 with minimal modification.

I agree with somerandomguy that you would be wise to use the latest release. I have been using OS 5.0.0.586 for quite a while and it has worked out very well for my setup. I even rolled back to it when I tried an update and it broke a few of my apps. But what works well for one user may not for another because of the differences in whatever is loaded on the phones. OS 5.0.0.586 would be good to try if the latest isn't working well for you.

Exclamation Re: BB OS Version 5.0.0.586 vs. 5.0.0.714... thoughts/comparisons?

BUMP! Decided to upgrade to the latest release, but accidentally installed that bloated memory hog 6.0 instead! And now I can't remember how to downgrade! Even after deleting 6.0 from my PC, AppLoader isn't giving me the option to downgrade, and neither is the BB Desktop Manager software! Someone, please help jog my memory on how to get this bloated thing off my 9700 before I shoot it!
