I just got the 8703e from Verizon as well. I installed Google Talk (free from RIM) and Ramble for AIM (free). There's links in the 3rd party applications forum (sticky).

I can't post links yet because I haven't hit 10 posts. Go to the main forum page, then go the Aftermarket Software forum. The first sticky post has links to various IM clients

no charge to use aim as long as you are using a client that uses a data connection, ramble, yak-on, im+, and verichat are all examples of software taht use data conection (ie: no text charge)

I'd much rather an official client from Blackberry, but I haven't been kicked of Ramble yet

It happens fairly frequently to me too, and I'm on T-Mobile. Changing the port from 8080 to 1290 will get you booted less frequently. You can change that from the Options menu.

Do you think this will be something we have to pay for with the new blackberry AIM. I've never owned a BLackberry so i know nothing about how these downloads and etc work.

Most likely just like Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger, AIM will hopefully be no charge.

I used Ramble with my 8703e (Verizon) for a few weeks, and was constantly kicked off. I sucked up the initial cost and switched to IM+ and have no problems.

I've been using Ramble on my 8700 (Suncom) and the only problem I've had is that it logs you off if you don't use it for awhile. Otherwise it seems adequate. I'm a newbie too, but I'm looking forward to an official version - yahoo messenger and google talk work really well...

Yeah it seems Ramble is the only cost-free solution at the moment. I know RIM was in the works of making an AIM client similar to their Google Talk and Yahoo clients, whatever became of that?
