So are there any major issues/problems with the 4.0 beta that any of you have noticed?

Just a lot of little bugs and fine tuning to go over.

Pretty much. 4.0.0.100 is good enough that the bugs are all pretty minor. I agree that it's just really fine tuning time now.

Has anyone tried the modem drivers located in the common folder? Are they what I think they are?

I don't see a Modem subdirectory. I checked my 4.0.0.100 files:

- "C:\Program Files\Research In Motion" directory tree
- Inside the zip file of my latest Blackberry Desktop download

[Edit: I do see them now:
C:\program files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers]

Very interesting. Is this BlackberryModem?

It would look like it. I had to remove 4.0 as I had too many problems with it, but from the look of it I would say that it IS a modem driver, which would explain the purpose of the new software router the desktop manager installs.

Oh, and this would also explain the "TCP" setting in the control panel.....

Has anyone experienced problems using SELECT MODE in the browser under 4.0? Trying to select text to copy resulted in the browser freezing, and the only way to use the BB was to use the ALT-ESC to get out of the frozen browser. The browser remained "dead" until soft reset of the handheld.

Also, during a number of these soft reset cycles, the handheld reported SIM errors, and refused to reset, or function -- requiring me to remove the battery in order to get the device to reset.

Anyone else notice this?

The BlackBerry Router is for something totally different. Instead of your emails, etc. going over the air, when your BlackBerry is connected to your PC, it routes everything through the router through your LAN to your handheld. I will find out tomorrow if the BlackBerry supports being a modem but I have heard NO mention of it thus far so I highly doubt it.

It's pretty clear already from the new Blackberry Desktop that RIM intends that at least one future Blackberry (at the absolute minimum) support being used as a modem. The question is will it work on current Blackberries such as 7280 with the addition of another BlackberryOS component added to the 7280.

I successfully installed the RIM-branded modem driver with no error messages but fail in attempting to actually use it. The RIM-programmed Blackberry software on my system actually displays this exact dialog box when I try to access the virtual COM port enabled by the driver in the modem subdirectory:
Quote:
Blackberry Handheld Manager.

The connected handheld does not have the necessary
software required for modem functionality installed.
Please contact your carrier for the required handheld
software update.
This is pretty irrefutable proof that RIM intends at least one Blackberry (at least a future one, like 7290) to be treatable as a modem for a laptop.

But yes, please find out if current Blackberries can be upgraded with this "software update" for modem functionality. This dialog message implies that this is a software update.

It's possible that this is a value-added option that the carrier sells, as the messages indicates I have to obtain the software from the carrier.

UPDATE: I just found out that it will be possible to use the BlackBerry as a modem. However, the device needs to be provisioned on the carrier side to allow for such traffic to pass. The carrier may charge a monthly fee for it, not sure though.

Is this limited to the model 7290 or will this work on older Blackberries?

I've been bugging hell out of my RimRep, who has absolutely stonewalled my butt for details.

Fortunately, I'll be seeing him soon, and I'm bigger than him

It's easy...either get a job at RIM or get a job at once of RIM's bigger clients
And that doesn't even necessarily help :D

So, under 4.0.0.100 ALT-CAP-H still gives the help screen. But so does ALT-CAP-<any letter> with the exception of B and V. Any idea what goodies are hiding behind some whacky combination of ALT-CAP-B/V?
