Default Chicken and Egg, Again!

Please Login to Remove!

I want a particular set of texts on our PlayBooks and Torches. In the email exchange with the publisher I discovered they have the product for the Torches but not the Playbook. No surprise there.

But, the representative went on to say "I don't know how much different these new BlackBerry platforms are but in all honesty, we'll have to see some significant market response to consider these new devices."

Chicken and Egg situation again. I'm enough out of the techie loop that I haven't a clue how much money it costs to update a product to the new devices. I do know that for OS like Windows there are enough hooks it really is relatively simple.

Could it be that the device market is so dominated by a few big players the smaller ones have little chance of successfully breaking in. Despite its' history Blackberry has to be considered a little guy trying to break into a gigantic market.

Depending on the programming language used to build the app there is more or less work in bringing it to a new platform. Still, this means an investment. So they are probably looking at the size of IOS or Android ecosystems and compare it with blackberry. Indeed, BB is a small sized ecosystem compared with those two but I think it allows for more visibility (that is, if you are a new comer). Guess their estimates don't show such a big bang for the buck that it would worth entering BB realm.

BlackBerry has been doing quite a bit to woo developers but, yes, BB is a small player now in a market, especially in the US, that is quite negative towards it. Netflix, for example, refuses to release an app that is apparently desperately wanted by many PlayBook owners. There are said to be ~2 million PlayBooks in the wild. If only 5% of PB bought a subscription, it would generate a few hundred thousand dollars of cash flow which is surely enough to cover the cost of the app's development.

So, if there is no "app" you can't get to a Web Site, or use a service? I just used the PlayBook browser and Netflix worked just fine.

Don't build a box around yourself. No Box is the only way to go.
