Cool. My contract w/VZW is up next November and I'm going w/AT&T. Hope there's something I like!

I wouldn't get too excited. It will probably be one new platform (9000 series, maybe) and the rest variants of what is already out there. Still good to see BB hasn't gone Palm on us.

Yeah, I've heard from a few inside folks (*cough*RUMORS*cough*) that there may even be a 3G BlackBerry available from AT&T coming this way sometime in '08.

Don't quote me on that, though. =P

Yeah, and it's sad, you know ... you think that, working for the company, I (we) would get a better heads-up on it, but no. We pretty much, believe it or not, don't get any definite information that something is coming out, BlackBerry or not, until the day of its release (or the day preceding). Truly, don't believe that stuff that reps tell you when "the next BIIIIIG release for [insert product here] is coming out in two weeks," because to tell it like that isn't telling it like it is.

That is the defacto TRUTH too!!!

I was waiting to see what the 9000 series would bring to the table. I'm looking forward to this.

Well considering that the new FCC 8120 specs came out with the whole Edge / GPS and wifi included for the next GSM Pearl not surprised there would be another slew of blackberries to come. If the rumors are true about a 3G GSM based blackberry, i might just buckle and switch from my faithful sprint, because they're killing me with making me wait in the stone ages!!!

Default 3g / Gps / Wifi ???

So based on what we have heard so far.

Is it fair to ASSUME that the next slew of BB will include 3G/GPS/WIFI???

What do you think????

I think it's safe to say that we'll have the 9100, 9300 and 9900 series families. Whether or not there will be two other families is an unknown. Between these three families, I think we'll easily see 6 devices (one GSM, one CDMA), possibly more (a la cross-technology hybrid devices).

AT&T keeps telling me even my little town will have 3G by next summer, so to remain competitive one of the new 9000 series will have to be 3G...BUT...if the 3G model drains battery like my former Blackjack (even with the extended battery) there goes the svelte and light Curve. On my Blackjack, when in a solid 3G are like San Antonio or central Dallas/Houston, it cut battery life by a third or more. If the coverage is spotty, like many suburban areas, the hit is north of 50%. In fact, one of the first hacks for the Blackjack was switching off the 3G radio and throttling back to EDGE to save battery. Apple wasn't wrong in arguing 3G radios are not yet ready for prime time battery-wise. Yes, it flat SCREAMS (I like it way better than WiFi, and GREAT for tethering) but unless they solve the radio/battery problem, you're not going to want 3G on a Curve or Pearl, unless you carry an exceptionally long extension cord.

" unless you carry an exceptionally long extension cord"

I have a couple 100 foot cords hope that will do

Yeah the battery life on the crapjack isn't so great now that it is on 3G but thats okay to me

Truthfully, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole 3G BlackBerry thing flops over horrible battery life and either gets pulled, or even has a replacement model with only EDGE, comparable specifications.

Wouldn't be the first time that AT&T has pulled a device because of some problem for a while and needed to re-release later on for some reason or another (*cough*Nokia 6682*cough*).

Or you could switch to Verizon or Sprint and get EVDO speed with decent battery life.

Really? Everyone I have every talked to that uses their 8830 heavily for browsing or email has worse battery life than my 8310, and it even has a large capacity battery. At the school I work at, I know at LEAST 9 students I talk to on a daily basis with heavy internet usage, and they ALL have worse battery life than me and my EDGE 8310, and they have a larger battery. There are other complaints on the 8830's battery life as well if you search.

Your not going to notice it if you dont browse or do HEAVY email, but those of us that do will hate 3G and the lower battery life.

This is most likely due to CDMA devices having a shorter battery life than GSM devices as CDMA devices are constantly searching for the network even while idle.

Well im also sure the higher throughput of a 3G device sucks more power too.

Not gonna happen. Newly released chips, in theory, can now switch bewteen EDGE and 3G. Stay in EDGE mode for email and light duty, but automatically up itself to 3G for downloads, tethering, web browsing, etc.

Configurable setting "3G Only"/"EDGE Only"/"PowerSave":

"EDGE/3G Mode: [PowerSave]"

PowerSave would mean EDGE only, while going to 3G everytime data requests reached a high rate.

All your message says is they're just going to release a firmware update to downswitch to EDGE (instead of a replacement model) to let you do a powersave mode by keeping the BlackBerry in EDGE mode most of the time.

Even a 2004 released chip, the Qualcomm MSM6255, can switch between 3G and EDGE. That's long enough for the standard 18-month development cycle, and newer superior chips with lower power have already been released, that can switch between EDGE and 3G.
