Default Missing Search facility: Bold 9700 - 6.0 Bundle 2534 (v6.0.0.57xxx8203;0).

Hi -

Can anyone explain why the excellent and comprehensive Search function on the BB was removed in one of the software updates about a year ago ?

When I first got my BB 9700 in 2010, I could go to a generic Search facility on the phone and search for any contacts, diary entries etc on the basis of very limited search clues. For example, I could enter three numerical digits and press Search, the facility would then produce any results with those three digits or letters in sequence - phone numbers, spreadsheet calculations, Memopad and Task entries, addresses. This feature was also available on my previous phone the Curve.

A good example of its practical use was for all those occasions when you have a missed call from a number you don't recognise; this facility would quickly search through all your diary entries, contacts and other fields on the BB to find out whether the number was connected with anyone you know. Sadly, no more.

For some reason, it was removed in the last major software update. This now means that the search facility on my BB is very limited and pretty useless in comparison.

What were RIM developers thinking when they did this ?? It is one of the main reasons why I am now considering changing smartphone brand for the first time in 6 years. I'd love to know the reasons behind this retrograde step.

Thanks in advance.

I have 6.0 2949 and search works including extended search on the entire BB.

There is an app called "classic search" in the app store. Which claims to bring back the search function of OS5 to OS6.

I also think the search function in OS6 is junk, because instead on focusing on a search in the device, you get google results on topics you dont want. But besides from this the local results are the same.

The local search with OS5 is also limited. You wont find a city or street name in the address book. But the comment field of an address record is searched. This has not been improved in OS6 or OS7. Why Rim is unable to do a fulltext search on an unencrypted, uncompressed device I really dont understand.
