I have a user who received a Blackberry to replace his cell phone. Brilliant guy that he is, he went into the personal email icon and set up his Gmail account before it was added to the BES. I had him wipe the Blackberry but he is still receiving all of his gmail. How do we go about getting rid of the gmail access as it violates our company policy?

I'm great with enterprise email but when it comes to personal email I'm clueless.

What's the OS version on the handheld? If it's 4.2 or higher, you can block BIS messages with an IT policy. You probably need BES 4.1 or higher to do this as well.

If it's lower than 4.2 on the handheld, the only thing you can really do is force BIS replies to go through BES/Desktop email. You won't be able to prevent BIS message delivery to the device.

Also doesn't matter if he set up BIS before or after you configured on BES.
Even after it's configured on BES, the user will still be able to set up BIS by going to their BIS portal for their carrier on the web.

He will need to login to the BIS site and delete the email account. Or as a temp fix he can delete the service books related to gmail.

Which service books are those? I don't think there's access to the BIS site since he didn't go through that and the icon is now missing per our IT policy.

BIS IS disabled via the IT policy. It apparently isn't having any affect on the email delivery. He has a Pearl and did this on Tuesday.

What do you mean "BIS IS disabled via the IT policy"?
How did you disable it?

The way you prevent BIS messages using IT policy is to adjust the Firewall Block Incoming Messages policy. Did you set that?

Are you sure the Policy was successfully applied to the device?

Well, I didn't set up the IT policy but I'll make that change.

I guess I should say the policy (once it is applied) removes icons that are not enterprise related (media net browser, personal email setup, etc).


Now I just await user feedback.

I am looking to permanently disable email. Al we want is Intranet and cell phone available but nothing else on an 8520. We do have a BES

Well, that certainly is a unique approach to BlackBerry usage.
I've never seen or heard of anyone getting BlackBerry devices, and a BES, and NOT using email. Interesting.

I don't know that you can actually do this, but I'm curious enough to do some research for you.

I understand the need for some users to be able to use a Blackberry without a BlackBerry Data Plan... but that not exactly appropriate for the question that was asked here.

This user has a BES, and wants to continue to use it for Intranet purposes... meaning they need MDS. BES will absolutely require the BlackBerry Data Plan.
Basically, they want BES without e-mail. This does exist (BES for MDS Services?) but I don't think that's what this user has. They apparently have some type of messaging platform that they wish to disable while keeping MDS enabled.

Unless I misunderstood this users intentions... which is entirely possible...
