Default Understanding Blackberry Memory: RAM vs. Flash

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

What's the difference between RAM and Flash memory?
I know my 8100 comes with 64 MB Flash memory. I believe the device also has additional RAM memory that is used by the Blackberry OS. Only when the RAM is running out, will the Flash memory be used (like paging). Of course, Flash memory is also used to store offline data.

How can I determine the RAM on my 8100 device? Blackberry doesn't seem to publicize this info much.

Thanks!

According to Wikipedia, the 8100 has 16MB of SDRAM.

Thanks for the info, Pierre.
We are trying to run some performance numbers for an application our company is developing for Blackberry. Is there a way to confirm that the 8100 has 16MB SDRAM by looking it up on the device? Is this information officially posted on RIM website for the 8100 and other devices?

Thanks,

You could check the website, it's probably buried deep in some obscure tech page.

I'm pretty sure that all of the 81xx devices have 32MB SDRAM in conjunction with 64MB of Flash ROM. The 64MB is used to store the OS and other persistent data (emails, contacts, apps, etc) while the 32MB is for memory overhead while running the actual device.

I've done a quick search through blackberry.com but it looks like they stopped posting the SDRAM sizes after the 87xx series.
