I searched, but couldn't really find an answer for this. If this has been asked already, I appologize.

Just curious though. Has anyone tried activating their Bold with their BES through WiFi? I would imagine, if this works, it would be a whole lot faster than to go through the carriers network entirely.

Activating? No. I activated BES through EDGE, but it was faster than when I activated my Curve through the same connection. Still a bit slow, but nothing unbearable. Besides, you should only need to do this one time, unless you are replacing the device or upgrading the OS, right?

I've done a few over wifi and a few over the 3G. sometimes the wifi stalls before it starts for a long time. whereas the 3g seems to clock along at a good pace straight through. I have a couple users with 5k+ contacts and that is where even with the beginning stall the wifi flies through it. With a few hundred contacts I use 3G cause seems more reliable for me.

If you attempt to activate over wifi, and your previous device didn't have that capability, it will not complete the activation. As the process moves on, all settings pushed by the BES are initialized as they are received. This means at some point the radio profiles are going to be reset to what the BES had on record at last contact, and if there was no wifi, the connection will drop. In this case, the cell radio would attempt to take over as long as it is turned on and has signal.

If the previous device did have wifi, it will just get stuck and hang when the radio profiles are pushed. Connection will drop, eventually reestablish, and life will move on.

That is, as long as you are in a wireless network that the last device was already configured to use....

Personally, I use the bypass option on all my activations. I login to my corporate network with the VPN and leave DM running. Then connect the Bold via the USB cable. Now the activation data passes through the laptop to the Bold at teh same speed as my VPN back to corporate. This is the fastest way to get an activation to complete.

Of course USB is going to be the fastest way.

I was just wondering if it was possible, and how well it works, to do it over WiFi since it's faster than the regular wireless signal.

Oh that would be torture... I would never dream of doing that to my users!
