Question BES 4.1 upgrade to 5.0

Please Login to Remove!

Hello everyone

I am new to administering BES server.
We recently installed 4.1 a month 5.0 came out and would like to upgrade to 5.0

I tried upgrading to 5.0 from 4.1 via a direct upgrade but it ask me for an upgrade key. Unfortunately our reseller told us to just uninstall 4.1 and reinstall 5.0.

The problem I have with this is that if i uninstall 4.1 and reinstall 5.0 without removing the user database. Will my users still remain on the BES? Or do I have to do a full uninstallation and have to re-add the users to the BES?

I am trying to avoid losing all my users because I do not want there blackberry to be wiped in order to sync with our BES server via Enterprise Activsion.

On another note is there a support number for BES? in the Canada/North America region?

You shouldn't need an upgrade key if you are currently running the full version of BES 4.1.

Are you running BlackBerry Professional Software 4.1 by any chance?

We had a 10 user CAL that i remove and install with a 20 user CAL.

Yes I am using the BlackBerry Professional Software for Microsoft Exchange.

OK, then you do need to purchase the upgrade key.
You can't do a straight upgrade to BES 5 from BPS 4.1 without paying for it.
It's not a free upgrade.

our reseller did provide us new keys for BES 5.0.
that's why I was wondering if i can just uninstall BPS 4.1 and use the same configuration database for BES 5.0 so that all my users will still remain.

In theory if you remove the old CALs from the database and start the BES 5 installer, pointing it to the existing database ... yes.

CALs are stored in the licensekeys table and match their actual CAL ID

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes. But when we upgraded BB Tech Support said I could do a direct but it never worked. A table entry did not exist in the old DB and the new DB did not creat it. So next they said I could do a fresh install and use the old DB and keep my user info. Again it did not work. The default IT policy from the old server version prevented the users from being able to connect to the new install. I had to wipe all 60+ user phones and reactivate. With 20 users it should not be that hard. Backup each phone on a desktop and then restore after activation. Good luck.
