Question Uncaught Exception - Java.Lang.NullPointerException

Please Login to Remove!

First off, Merry Christmas!

So I've had my Bold since the day it was released on AT&T....never had any problems whatsoever (still using .167 which came preloaded). Then last night in the middle of the night I got a phone call....tried to ignore it so the phone would stop ringing and I think (it was 3 am) I entered my password (usually you don't have to to silence a call)...then I get the following message:

"Uncaught Exception: Java.Lang.NullPointerException"

Now everytime I reboot my phone (tried a few Alt/Shift/Deletes and a battery pull) I get the error after the security check on startup.

After I hit OK the phone seems to operate normally (although I haven't tested it a ton).

The one thing I noticed which no longer works (no idea if it is related) is the SMS shortcut key in the message list (hit Alt S to filter just your SMS messages). When I hit that nothing happens. Alt-M (MMS), Alt-P (Calls) and Alt-V (voicemails) don't seem to work either. But the regular email related ones (Alt-O, I, and a few others I created) seem to work fine. If I go to Search / Recall all of the shortcuts are listed there and has the shortcut of S, M, etc in (). BTW I have my Messages / SMS combined rather than Theme Controlled.

I am using the AT&T theme that came w/ the phone and the only 3rd party apps I have installed (and they have been installed for a while w/ no issues) are Google Maps, Facebook and Opera Mini.

Anyway kind of bummed to be seeing this error. Searched around and it seems the recommended solution is to do a software upgrade? I'm not totally opposed to doing that but would prefer not to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Eric

Update/reinstall your OS. That often cleans up these java errors.

Just did another test and I can send and receive SMS. Also I can see the SMS-Inbox and Outbox folders if I go to Menu / Folders. The only thing not working is the Alt-S shortcut (and Alt-M, etc), which unfortunately I use all the time.

Maybe this will give me an excuse to update the OS...haven't done it yet b/c everything was working so smoothly I was afraid to upset it.

Found this on BB's Support site:

I am on BES so not sure if this will work.

I can see the folders too, but if I click on SMS Inbox, I get the exception. Very frustrating. Looks like I'll be reloading the OS. When I look for SMS Messages in the DM advanced its not even there. ??????

Check out this thread...I posted in the BlackBerry Support forums and got a pretty good response back. Unfortunatley I think the solution is to reinstall the software. I may try the SIM reseating (doubt that is the problem) and not sure the address book wipe will work for me since I am on BES and use wireless sync for my contacts.

Thinking of installing 210 (I know it's beta but it seems like people have nothing but good things to say about it). If not I will probably go w/ 190 (the latest official release). Probably won't have a chance to do the reinstall for a few days however since I won't be in the office.

Let me know if the reinstall fixes your problems.

So I installed OS 210 this morning - it's beta but based on the glowing reviews I've read I figured it was worth a shot. I was blown away by how quickly the Bold updates - 30 mins from plugging in to having a full BES activation and everything exactly where it was before (my pearl took well over an hour).

So far so good. Haven't gotten the Java error, my SMS / MMS message list shortcuts work and my call logs are now updating (that was another problem I noticed before the update - my call log would never refresh). On top of that, I have basically double the available memory after a reboot than I had under 167 (46.8 mb vs. ~23) and the browser seems noticeably faster to me (others have reported this as well).

So I'm a happy camper (for the time being).

I started receiving this message "right outof the box" with my 9000 every time I made or received a phone call. The sales person at AT&T said that if I had more than 5 apps open at one time, I could get that error. So, I closed as many as I could and the error went away for about 1 hour. I called AT&T tech support, they said if you have a java error, exchange the phone. I pulled the battery, and I have not had the error message since.

I received this error for the first time a few nights ago. I didn't really do anything different, the only thing i did was take off some apps such as BB messenger, and the stupid games that comes pre-loaded.

I got this error and all my icons were moved back to the original places, as if it was out of the box, not only that but my profile option was gone completley. I just turned it off and on and it reset so i'm not sure if that helps but thats what happened to me.

I actually had this happen to me a couple of times, just ok'd through and it was still fine. Last night, I got it again, but this time it kept popping up and so after about 5-6 times it finally stopped, but then my phone froze, while I was going through my SMS box. I did a batt pull and it's been pretty good since then... I'm trying to wait patiently for the next official OS release, I'm not to confident to use a beta since this is my first BB.
