Tethered via Bluetooth on MacBook Pro

Here are my results for a bluetooth connection to my Bold via a MacBook Pro.
The first is using the Wifi connection on (847 kbps D/254 kbps U) the and the second is with WiFi turned off (903 kbps D/243 kbs U).
You can see they are both about the same. I am not sure if when the WiFi is on, whether that is used or the 3G?
I must say that this was the easiest modem connection for my Mac.
BTW, my net connection is dedicated 15Mbps.

Bluetooth has historically been pretty low bandwidth - can some of you guys with Bluetooth benchmarks try the same connection via USB? I'm curious if there's a speed difference. (Newer bluetooth revisions claim 2.1 Mb/s connections or better, but both sides of the connection have to support that...)
I'd try it myself, but I'm still waiting for that AT&T release!  |

Could you share some config details on the Mac? Did you use any custom modem scripts? I can pair the Mac with my Bold, but I'm still twiddling the modem setting, trying to get it to establish the connection. |

I cannot predict, but unless AT&T does something to the device that actually prevents tethering, I do not see why not.
AT&T has generally been very open to the idea of tethering (either USB or bluetooth) and unlike VZW, they are not known to cripple any device features in hardware. So one would hope that AT&T keeps up to their reputation!

Yes, but be sure to have a lot of data (like 6GB plan, for example). I don't give a crap about my usage because work pays for it, but I used it use Remote Desktop Connection onto one of my PCs... in like 15-20 minutes, it chewed up 1.6Mb of data. So good to have a solid amount, otherwise you will get a lousy bill. |

When I am connected to my DSL provider (Sympatico) I get 6181 download and 908 up. It identifies that my ISP is Sympatico.
On tethered Blackberry Bold on the Rogers network, I am only getting download speeds of 563 kb/s and upload speeds of 216kb/s. I am on BES. When I first connect Windows tells me that the "Blackberry modem is connected speed 203.4kps". It identifies my ISP as "Verison Business".
According to the blackberry I am connected to 3g at -70 bd. (No matter what, I never get better than -70 on 3g, but register stronger signals on edge)
What is going on here with the relatively slow download speeds and speedtest.net identifying my isp correctly when conected over dsl, but mis-itentifying the carrier when connected thorugh the blackberry?

Signal quality has a lot to do with your download speeds. 3G is supposed to run up to 3.0Mbps (3,000Kbps), but in reality, you do not get that. I find during the day, where there are a lot of air wave traffic, I typically end up getting about 1.4-1.5Kbps. The results I had were done at a weekend evening, at 1am.
You also can't compare your Rogers mobile phone, to your home DSL service....... Rogers Cable Internet is also going to be a lot quicker than tethering with a Bold on Rogers Wireless 3G. |

Could you of been picking up a Verizon 3G tower and utilizing 3G service through them?

Verizon's 3G is EVDO and is incompatible with that of AT&T and/or Rogers. The Bold does not support EVDO.
The reason why you are seeing VZW business is probably because Rogers uses the old MCI/UUNET internet backbone for their data network.

That's a more plausable answer. There was no way I was picking up a Verizon 3G signal on my Bold in north Toronto from a CDMA based provider. |

I'm beginning to understand some of the frustration Rogers customers are having with the Bold.
I fought with this both USB & BlueTooth for several days in both Toronto and Montreal. My average speed never topped 680k dl.
Home on AT&T in Austin with no changes to the configuration...
I know I am right on the fringe of the tower here at my house. So I might be able to get better speeds with a stronger connection. |

Very disappointing results
During the day, I barely got 1mb down and just over 300 up with my Bold. Tonight, 871/309 with 3G and full bars. Brutal.
My config is as detailed in the FAQ. Given that, what a major disappointment.
I'd love to post the results, however, as I have less than 10 posts, I'm not allowed to.  |
