Default Does the Camera Really Suck on the Tour?

Please Login to Remove!

So they finally did it, they made a BB that meets all three of my requirements to give up my 8830:
  • Includes a Camera
  • Worldphone Capable
  • Keeps the 8830 Form Factor Instead of Going Slim

So then I read on the Cnet review of the Tour for Verizon (I assume the Sprint version will be no better or worse) that the camera on these sucks. Is there any truth to this? Should I just keep my 8830 and be happy, or should I take the plunge? My 8830 works fine and I really see no need to switch if the new phone does not have a good camera.

There's a big thread over at CrackBerry with folks posting pics taken with their Tours. Some truly beautiful shots: Pix taken from your Tour - BlackBerry Forums at CrackBerry.com
As with any phone cam, results depend greatly on lighting conditions. It's not a Nikon, after all!

I read the review that you gave the link for.

Nonsense on the "Bad".

Every darn digital camera I have ever had has had some lag. To me, the Tour lag just isn't any concern. I think the shutter sound it makes lags more than the actual photo itself.

It is a 3.2 MP camera. Darn good compared to nearly every cell phone on the market.

Web browser? Competition? With whom, iPhone? Compare BB to BB, not BB to iPhone. Ugh.

And WiFi... same old blah blah blah. I don't want WiFi. I have Rev A that is super fast and I don't have to screw around finding an open access point. To me, WiFi isn't worth the effort for what I would gain.

So, IMHO, GET THE TOUR!!

I went from the 8830 to the Tour. This camera WAY exceeded my expectations. And when the light/flash went off - I never expected that to be included. I have no complaints for a cell phone camera.

If I want a real good image I will haul out the DSLR. This will suffice for everyday quick situations just fine!

Wow, those DO look good. I am surprised the Cnet folks missed the mark so badly. Usually, they are fairly on target.

Speaking of the shutter sound, is there any way to turn the annoying thing off?

The browser always has sucked. That's just a given. I am waiting for Firefox for Blackberry, now that would be a dream come true. Not likely to ever happen, though. Although, I just updated my OS from a several year old version (whatever the 8830 shipped with... and I have had the thing for like... 2 years now... this was before the little cursor pointer thing, it was like being in Lynx with pictures, lol) and I must say the browser has improved alot. Its still nowhere near being as useful as Firefox or iPhone. You cant even play YouTube videos on the thing cause as far as I have ever found, there is no flash plugin for it.

WiFi is faster than Rev A for large file downloads. Though, it doesn't really much matter unless you use your phone as a modem or download torrents onto your phone.

I've been impressed with quality and speed so far, but I don't write for c|net so I must be wrong. :D

I find the camera to be quite good for a cell phone camera. Def better than the camera in the curve.

I was playing with the store model, and while the Tour doesn't zoom in as much as the Curve, the focus is great! I was really surprised with it. (for a cell phone camera)
