When using the browser or Google Maps, will my phone look for a Wi Fi network connection? I have Wi Fi access at home and I assume it uses that rather than me being chanrged for a connection. The reason I ask is that I don't know how to tell from the icons on the top right hannd corner. My Nokia N95 used to ask before connecting.

When you open your browser, you should see the 'wifi' icon in the top right. That will tell you that the browser is using the WiFi to connect to the Internet. If it shows 3G, EDGE, or GPRS, then you are using the data connection. The BB will not ask you to connect. It must already be connected for it to use WiFi.

Fantastic. at the moment the Wi Fi icon is showing because I have a wi fi network at home. above that it says 3G and the signal strength bars. Will the icon vanish completely if I am not using Wi fi to connect? also does Google maps use the Wi Fi connection if one is available?

Open the browser and see what shows up there. It will only show one. I'm not positive about Google Maps, but I believe it uses data only.

The best way to know with certainty is to manuaLly activate and disactivate your wifi and phone-carrier signal. Do this for each application. You will be quite surprised. For example - Facebook app will only work with your paid data connection. In some cases you can get around this by using the web-browser equivalent. (Since we know your web-browser will work with a wifi connection.)

Google Maps can access the Bold's GPS ... that's how it can track you on the map.

There are no fees for using the GPS (it's hardware built into the phone).

Hi, I have a question about the wifi indicator.

It appears white when I'm at the home screen but when I am using the browser, none of the indicators show up. It doesn't show 3G, Wifi, anything. So does this mean I'm using up my data or is it still on wifi? Thanks

Thats because you are on full page. Open the browser and hit "U" and you will get the status line which will list the connection.

It uses the GPS to pin point your location. However, it has to use Data/WiFi to access and download the map images.

Ah, in which case you would hardly use wifi if you are traveling, that is if google maps would/could use wifi. It is my understanding that not all programs will even use wifi. Is that a correct statement or is it misconstrued?

Correct.. I just turned off my Mobile Network (Cellular) conneciton and left my WiFi on..
Several apps quick working.. including Google Maps.

Some apps that are set to "Auto" detect (ex: Viigo) do not "auto" detect as advertised.
Had to change their network types in order to function.

Viigo had to be changed to "BIS-B" as all others failed/timed out without Mobile Network on
