we continue to experience issues on -some- of our handhelds in the Tampa FL, Baltimore MD and Boston MA areas. Best we get are "edge" and "GSM" signals - but no "EDGE".

EDGE means you are on the faster GPRS network or using 2.5g when its all in caps data should work. All lower case is no data but voice. You can see sometimes gprs in caps is data will work lower case no data. But all caps edge means you should be able to send / receive data

Technically EDGE or GPRS means connected to the BlackBerry servers at RIM, which edge or gprs means data is available, but for some reason the phone can't connect to the servers. There is some data that could still be sent, such as MMS. GSM means no data service is available, so only voice calls and text messages can be processed. Not even MMS can be processed with GSM.

ijunk/ windows mobile runs EDGE yet no bis, no blackberry connect, and edge/EDGE/grps/GPRS means what service you have, data being when on EDGE and no data when on edge. it has nothing to connected to rim, last night i had EDGE no rim servers.

We are getting so off topic, but then if MMS uses GSM and not GPRS/EGPRS, why am I not able to send MMS when my phone displays GSM?

Opera uses the wap proxy, not RIM's servers.

it varies for a variety of reasons, but gsm should have phone/mms/sms. hence why with out a texting plan you pay per text, they get transported differently from data. should also receive txt messages with data off in the phone.

but it also depends how the network was build up and expanded.

Ah I see. So that means I'm definitely having a BIS problem? When I pull the battery and restart, it connects to EDGE but later changes to edge and occasionally flashes back to EDGE

Ya. You can go to Options/Mobile Network/(menu)Diagnostics Test/(menu)Run and you can see there what you are connected to. It will always say your network is GPRS when you are attached to a capable tower, since EDGE is just a revision of GPRS.

Right now it says I am connected to EDGE but it still says edge on the home screen. Also in the section below that it says:

Blackberry registration: No
Connected to Blackberry: No
Blackberry PIN-PIN: No

What does that mean?
