Okay, I checked the User's Gudie and did confirm it does appear you can bridge an existing wireless nextwork with this router. Then I saw this in the manual:

So this somewhat limits the use of this router. I am not saying it is worthless by any means, just that if it did allow full bridging capabilities *and* still allow wireless clients to connect to it then you would have me sold. Maybe throw in an external antenna adapter for good measure as well (from my experience hotel wireless signals are quite poor...).

I bought this router a couple of weeks ago, used it in Geneva, Munich, and Tokyo with the 8320. Worked AWESOME!!

In ADDITION, this router will act as a "repeater," or access point, for another wireless network, and, somehow make it easier for UMA to work - I was in a hotel, with free, open Wifi, but, I could not get UMA to kick in. So, I plugged in this router, went to the setup, had it connect to the hotel open Wifi, then connected my 8320 to this Linksys, and voila! UMA worked great.

It will be coming with me wherever I go!

Thanks for the feedback! I was hoping someone would chime in with some good info. Mine should be showing up tomorrow. Then taking off on a 10 day trip and will get a chance to try it out.

Got this today and have it up and running. However, when my BB picks it up, UMA kicks in for about a minute and then goes back to EDGE and won't pick up UMA again unless I turn off wifi and turn it back on.

UMA works great on my WRT54G and I have the WTR54GS (travel router) plugged into a port on the WRT54G.

I haven't gotten mine yet ... do you have plans to try out dd-wrt on it?

Ok, well I got UMA working.... finally. I tried many different setting but I *think* the one that did it was under >Security >Firewall >SPI Firewall Protection: Disabled (it was enabled.) After I disabled that UMA seems to stay up and going just fine.

I just connected at a Hampton Inn this evening. Hampton's require you to enter a password in an authentication page. The 8320 will bring this page up and allow you to enter the code and wifi/uma will work fine. However, with the travel router I simply went into the router settings and cloned my PC's mac address. Then I opened IE and entered the password into the authentication page that came up. Then my BB picked up the wifi and UMA came up within a few moments. I didn't have to enter the login info again with the BB. A big on this router, especially since the TMo cell service in my room is next to nothing.

(Edit: There is no QoS setting on this router so it will be interesting to see how the battery holds up.)

You could get WMM support from that router John by loading up dd-wrt on it.

Looks like it's supported as of a month or so ago:
News

I amy have to pick one of these up, I just was in TX where my Residence inn provided me free internet with the room, but it was ethernet only.

Running a linux VM just to get my wireless card in AP mode hardly seems worthwhile if these work well and can be had for less then $50.

I suppose dd-wrt is an option. However, not quite ready to void the warranty just yet. So far, it's working great so will wait. Thanks for the tip.

Could not determine from the various posts on this topic. Hence the reason for the following question. Would this router allow me to connect by 8320 to an open network without the use of a laptop. The reason being is that on some travels I have to take my laptop but on others (training, vacationing internationally, etc) I do not take my laptop. However, even without a laptop I would still like to have a router that I can plug in, which can then obtain and strengthen any able source. Is this possible? I like what I have read about this router but would like some guidance regarding my question before pulling the trigger. thanks in advance for any assistance or guidance provided.

Well, it may work depending on the type of network. However, you need a browser to access the settings, etc. and also to make payment, if required. I would say it will work occasionally but probably not most of the time.

If you're not bringing a laptop, you really don't need a router. I've not tried the other travel routers but the setups are about the same on most routers. Its more of a limitation of the BB's browser. It won't always do all the authenticating needed. It will in many cases but not all. I've not tried accessing my router settings with my BB. Usually you want to do that with a wired connection anyway.

I have the Dlink, and it'd be about the same as the Linksys. I tried the BB browser and Opera Mini and the settings won't come up. However there's no reason to access the settings on it except in very rare instances.

Basically, you just plug the network cable in and hopefully the browser on the BB will let you login to the hotel's network. If not, you're not worse off for having tried. You'll still have the other options you had before like trying to find an open wifi network in a cafe or something.

You won't be able to authenticate on a wireless network with Opera Mini, because as I understand it all traffic goes through their servers. You should be able to use the built-in browser in WiFi mode; I believe that's actually what the Bookmarks / Wi-Fi Services / Wi-Fi Hotspot Login bookmark is for.

I installed DD-WRT on mine, and can't connect to the web interface to configure the router using the wifi on the Blackberry. I can use it fine with my laptop, wired on wireless. I've tried with the built-in browser and Opera Mini. Can anyone pull up the config screen using the bb?

I don't think that's possible. Why would you need to do that?

On a trip, no laptop. Need to config the router to reroute the wireless signal in the hotel with the bb.

I purchased a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 and put DD-WRT on it. While it is not really travel sized per say, it works... I set it up to act as a wireless repeater and it works perfectly in my hotels. Very high power transmit too...
