As posted above, I don't think this really fixes anything as far as UMA is concerned. Doesn't hurt to try, though.

Doh! Mine has been up pretty good for the last 40 hours or so. (I work from home a lot so I can tell pretty much what's happened with this outage) I've had a couple of "blip outs," but then it keeps coming back pretty quickly. What has been odd is that the UMA signal strength has varied more than I used to see it; sometimes when only 3 feet from the WAP I'm seeing only 1 "bar" of UMA strength.... Although right now it's a full 3.

I'm taking T-Mo at their word for now. They now about this problem, they're fixing as fast as they can (or they know they're dead in the market!), and I'm seeing way more improvement since the weekend. It makes lots of sense to me that improvements (or not!) would be regional in nature. We'll see where we go from here...

Hi All,

It seems that the OpenDNS is indeed isolated. Between this forum and Howard forums, this has only worked for 3 people (including myself). I can't explain it. I did learn that the address provided by the nslookup after switch to OpenDNS is indeed an OpenDNS owned address. However, I'm wondering if it is my phone firmware/settings that is allowing it to work just by being able to receive and answer (no matter how valid) from the dns query against "punc.t-mobileuncs.com". BTW, I changed my DNS static entries back to AT&T this evening and the UMA failed for all 3 of my phones ( I power-cycled them and my router as well). The second I changed back to OpenDNS and power cycled the phones, they started working. This is strange.

Hey John, updating this thread is the jinx... ;) As soon as I posted my last comment I looked down and noticed I had dropped UMA again!

i just talked to tmobile about this and they said its certainly down and they dont know when will it be backed up, looks like tmobile been having a lot of problems lately, they said some customers have it and some dont, the ones that do have it have lots of dropped calls on the connected wifi network which is wierd, because i always get dropped calls even though i got uma feature up and running, ahhh tmobile needs to hurry up and fix this problem haha

I keep updating the thread title daily. We're up to day 6 of this. I feel sorry for those who have paid for (and rely on) the UMA H@H service. Worst case for me I drop to EDGE. If you're paying for unlimited minutes then have 6 days (or more) of outage or unreliable service that's a long time!

Default DNS...probably. But have you called T-Mobile to report it yet???

I always seem to stumble on these forums when I have major issues like this. I started noticing the UMA problems today although they may have been going on all week and weekend.

Here is what I have noticed.

- UMA does not work at all although WiFI through the 8320 seems to pull pages and all other data just fine (with only Wifi NOT EDGE).
- Seeing error W006.1 (generic network error) in the Wireless connection settings
(Options-->Wifi Connections-->Wifi Diagnostics {on full menu}-->and then looking at UMA settings)
- This is most likely a DNS issue IF, and only IF, this URL and server name that has been passed around is correct (punc.t-mobileuncs.com). I have tried Comcast, earthlink, Bellsouth, and OpenDNS and cannot get this hostname to resolve much less telnet and make a connection.
- What is the correct IP address to this punc.t-mobileuncs.com?

- Has anyone reported this to T-MObile yet? (I have)
- If we do not all call and report it, no one is going to fix it. Trust me.

I got this 8320 because of crappy signals at my house. I am not suprised to see this service flop at this point since it is new. I am going to try and get some press on this to raise attention in the IT world.

DNS is going to be flaky depending on how your particular DNS replicates and gets its updates, how frequently, and which DNS servers it pulls from. T-Mobile is likely to be doing something wacky and may not understand the full impact since UMA is a relatively small segment of their user base. Make some noise and give them a call.

Are we sure this name is right? It does not seem to be resolving from even the root DNS servers...

If this name is hardcoded into the firmware on the 8320, there will not be a workaround until the DNS issues is fixed globally.

Where did this name come from and are we sure it is correct?

Update 9:30pm EST....
Suddenly, UMA is working on my phone. This is awesome technology. I am still convinced there is a network issue of some kind or Comcast is using SandVine to filter these requests thinking it is P2P traffic.? DNS seems to be a possibility but I still cannot resolve the hostname with any DNS server I try.

I have UMA right now, and have throughout the day. At the same time, I can not lookup punc.t-mobileuncs.com.

My thought is this...

Your phone connects to a IPSEC tunnel endpoint. At that point, your phone is likely given a private IP inside the T-Mobile network, as well as a list of internal t-mobile nameservers for it to use. Those servers keep their data internal for security reasons.

According to my router I am connecting to 208.54.3.1 on ports 500 and 4500 and 208.54.90.1 on port 500 (I assume 4500 as well, just not when I checked.) I have never seen it connecting to two different IPs before. One traces to Seattle on ATT and the other traces to LA on Level3. Before the only IP I was connecting to was in Seattle.

As tedious as it may seem, you need to go back and read this entire thread. You will see that it has been reported and admitted to quite thoroughly by T-Mobile. You'll also see that the DNS "fix" has been basically debunked. Great respect to that poster though! It was a brilliant idea that may have been it, but seems to have some sort of isolated relevance for just a couple of people.

Please go back in this thread and read it and I think you'll see many answers as well as support for what you have suggested as well!

I can not agree with you. The big carriers, AT&T and Verizon, still have a big investment in landlines, which TM in USA has none. They will not introduce a technology which would compete with those they already have. That is why you will not see them adopt anything like HS@H for a very long time.

Using 8320 in Boston, I don't use UMA consistently enough because I don't have the H@H service, however, I have not noticed any UMA issues for the periods when I had the phone on - last Saturday, this Tuesday night, right now at 11:57pm on Wednesday. Connects to UMA in under 5s once you turn on the WiFi.

I'm still getting a lower case uma instead of UMA.. Oddly enough though it doesn't seem to affect my data services at all, all connected applications work just fine.

If I revert back to edge I do get EDGE.
