We are going on vacation to NYC next week, and I want to use my Blackberry to check my emails and use facebook. If I unlock it what then? Do I need to by a Sim card and a prepaid card once we get over the border? Or is it just the prepaid card?

You'll to either have international voice and data from Rogers, or when you get here get a local ATT sim on pay as you go, but that won't get you data and email and your BIS service.

For that, your're probably better off just using Rogers' international data package.

But someone else from Canada will likely know what they have done before... just be patient, not all questions get answered in forums immediately and to "bump" your post in less than 24 hours is sort not cool.

You would need to find a prepaid card with BlackBerry services. T-Mobile MAY have one (I've never used it).

How steep are the roaming charges?

I can get 500 mb for 35.00 which is not bad but I have to keep it on for 3 months for some reason. I only need it for my trip so I really dont want to pay for it for 3 months!

I noticed that you apparently have a Bold 9700 (which has WiFi).

If you turn off data roaming on your Blackberry and keep your Rogers SIM in your phone (which had a compatible Blackberry data plan) while you're in the US and you have access to WiFi, you won't pay any roaming for accessing e-mail, messaging, or Facebook via WiFi.

Yes I could do that, I wonder if there are many free WiFi spots in NYC. I know our hotel charges 14.99 a day! Any hotels I have been to in Canada it has always been free!

Oddly enough, it seems the lower-end hotels have free internet and/or wi-fi, while the swankier ones never do.

You should be able to get a AT&T or T-Mobile pre-paid SIM with data plan on it. My friend was here from Europe recently, and he had done the same.

Ok I unlocked it, it was only 8.50 so if I dont use it I am not out much.
As soon as we get over the border I will look for a prepaid card so I can use it. A friend of mine does it with her iphone, she buys an unlimited monthly card for 80.00. I only need one for 6 days so hopefully I can find one cheaper than that.

You can buy at&t prepaid sim card or pay-as-u-go card. I use one with my old 8310 when I need another phone. att has 3 different payg plans. Any att store would have them. You can also use t-mo. Make sure to find out how much calls to Canada will cost you if you need them.
You can pick up wifi virtually anywhere in NYC. Write now I'm at Washington Square (NYU) and there are 3 different open networks that I picked up.
Have fun!!!

The reason I wanted ot take my phone was for emails etc, not for voicecalls. Our whole family is going so there isnt any need to call home.

I've also noticed this.

The 2.5 star hotels that I've stayed at generally include WiFi or network cable internet for free whereas the 4 star hotels that I've stayed at generally charge for internet access.
