Hello group,

I have been planning to get the T-Mo 8700 as soon as possible. One thing I have planned to use it for was as a wireless modem for my laptop, understanding that can be done with the 7290. However, I just checked out the preorder offer at ushopwireless.com and read on the FAQ page:

Will this work as a modem?
No, however you can surf the Internet directly through the device itself.

This stuns me. Is it true? Can anyone confirm that the 7290 has this functionality that is lacking in the 8700?

I use my 8700c as a modem whenever I can't get a wireless connection for my laptop. My download speeds run between 67k and 114k. Not screamin', but a whole lot faster than zero.

Yep - it's Cingular.

It would not be a limitation on the device. It would be a carrier limitation. If you search these fora you can find examples of people using their 8700 for a modem.

not sure about T-Mobile but I know my Cingular 8700c allows me to use it as a modem on my laptop.
