Weirdly, in South Africa, RIM has three times the market share of Android and iPhone combined, and that share is increasing.

This is something I don't understand... how is it that failure in the US spells certain death for RIM when RIM is doing well most everywhere else? Yeah, RIM has butchered their US presence, but in the grand scheme of things, how does that translate into RIM is knocking on death's door? Furthermore, if Claidheamhmor is correct, then along the same lines as "RIM is drowning because their US marketshare is dwindling," couldn't we also say that Apple and Google are in trouble because they have such a small marketshare in South Africa?

RIM's price is just market sentiments. The company itself (+intellectual property) is worth way more than its shares.
The problem is, can RIM hold until new devices hit the market? Will they surprise the market and bring new devices ahead of the time set as deadline? Will the devices be competitive and pose threat to the competition?

Americans losing addiction to "CrackBerrys" - Yahoo! Finance

I saw this on Yahoo and thought I would come back and see what the buzz on this forum was. I finally ditched my Blackberry and I don't have any regrets. The e-mail is way better on BB than any other device. That's where it ends. Who needs a keyboard. I now have a device that understands my spoken English, even though it is probably not the best spoken English.

My small company now has no Blackberry users. I miss you guys, but not my Storm 2.

Source RIM via e-mail sent from Kevin at cb.com

"RIM made a strategic decision to launch BlackBerry 10 devices with a new, LTE-based dual core chip set architecture. As explained on our earnings call, the broad engineering impact of this decision and certain other factors significantly influenced the anticipated timing for the BlackBerry 10 devices. The anonymous claim suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and uninformed. As RIM has previously explained, and as Mike Lazaridis reiterated on the earnings call, we will not launch BlackBerry 10 devices until we know they are ready and we believe this new chip set architecture is required to deliver the world class user experience that our customers will expect. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply false. We appreciate the interest in our future platform and we will continue to work hard to deliver that platform as soon as possible. At the same time, we also remain very excited with the success of our recently launched BlackBerry 7 smartphones and we believe these products offer a very compelling choice for both new customers and the almost 75 million BlackBerry users around the world."

Since the 7 phones have been an abysmal competitive failure, I think the truthfulness of that statement tells us how far we can trust them as far as the first statement goes.

That statement is up for debate (yours). Doesn't seem to mention anything about OS 7 devices, but mentions the as yet unreleased devices based on QNX. While the above statement made by RIM does indeed tell me something, it probably doesn't tell you and I the same thing.

Merry Christmas

It's over for RIM. The company's the walking dead. We all know that. The market now has realized it. At some point someone like HTC or Nokia or someone else will snap it up for its patents and its enterprise business. (Maybe even ZTE, the Chinese mobile OEM that is trying to move up the stack and become a consumer brand.)

I actually switched to Nokia 700 which seems to be very nice and cheap phone... Check it out..

I haven't seen this posted in BBF, so I will.

Does anyone here recall what a failing company Apple had become in the late 80s and early 90s... roughly about ten years after it's founding (about the same age as RIM is now).

If you don't, (and some few posters here are too young and/or too ignorant to recall) please allow me to refresh your memory:
History of Apple Inc. - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
In the late 1980s, Apple's fiercest technological rivals were the Amiga and Atari ST platforms. But by the 1990s, computers based on the IBM PC had become more popular than all three; they finally had a comparable GUI thanks to Windows 3.0, and were out-competing Apple.

Apple's response to the PC threat was a profusion of new Macintosh lines including Quadra, Centris, and Performa. Unfortunately, these new lines were marketed poorly by what was now "arguably one of the worst-managed companies in the industry". For one, there were too many models, differentiated by very minor graduations in their tech specs.
Does that sound familiar?

Review the company's financial performance:
Over a two-year period in 1996-97, Apple lost almost two billion dollars in net profits, and for three years its revenue growth was at -11%, -28% and -16%, bouncing back in 2000 with a 30% increase, only to drop it again in 2001 with -33% in revenue growth.

AAPL stock in March 2000 was selling at $31.50, by November of the same year, it had fallen to $8.25. AND, it took over four years for AAPL to reach that $31.50 price again.

Remember, Steve Jobs was fired from Apple over years ago, and he sold ALL of his stock.

So, anyway, things aren't quite what they seem... always. Otherwise, Apple would never have been able to re-design its future and become the company it is known as today.

The question is, can RIM do it?

It's been mentioned ... that Apple was in a deep dive once, too, etc. etc.

But that is the question: Can RIM pull up in time?

Unfortunately, no.
I see more parallels between Novell and RIM as opposed to Apple and RIM.
Novell was once the great powerhouse in enterprise networking, and simply failed to innovate and was eventually pushed clean out of the market. RIM will likely suffer the same fate. They'll eventually be gobbled up by a larger company and might even linger around for a while pumping out more handsets that few people will buy. I don't see them ever being as successful as they once were.
