ok i got my g1 trackball today and installed it..thinking the black ring around the g1 trackball will make the ring black i ordered the g1 after ordering the 8900..well i can tell you first hand that even with the g1 trackabll it still shows the silver ring because like the previous poster mentioned the silver ring is part of the clip holdind in the trackball..so it doesnt matter which trackball u get..g1 or 8900.

Got it done yesterday but how the hell do you pry open the thing that holds the trackball? I tried tweezers but that went nowhere.

its hard to see in the video on exactly what he does..basically the clip is held on by 4 points..if u look at it closely you will see the tab you need to pull slightly to get it off..

I just used a very small precision straight screwdriver to lift the two front tabs that lock the retainer down and popped the retainer off.....all the way across the dining room....

I'm still waiting for mine to come in. I might get some matte black spray paint and color that ring myself. Hopefully it doesn't come off

I just installed my trackball this morning, which was much easier than I thought it would be. I used a safety pin at the points that the arrows were pointing to on the silver piece, which had come off with little problem.

Questions for people who did this.

1. Did you guys get a blacked out top mute button? Mine didn't come with it.

2. Does our back button feel a bit weird?

Does the Black Bezel come with Black side buttons also, or do you still have to use your chrome side buttons??

You can purchase the black buttons separately.
