I assume the 8800 could be used as a SIP phone on my corp network registered to an asterisk server as i see a lot of settings for this in the BES policy. so this would be an advantage for me.

So two things, the most obvious, are definitely known. That's a whole lot of advantages. I have yet to see ANY new policies for the BES for Wi-Fi access, and considering they give the option disable all new features, I would have to take a guess and say that Wi-Fi is NOT going to be on the 8800. I would imagine we will see expandable memory, though... but that and the faster processor are pure speculation at this point (until something more than just photos are released). VAD has already been ruled out for the 8800, thus far. By the time the 8800 is released, we will have OS 4.2 for the 8700, which included a media player for audio playback (and what I believe to include video capabilities, as well, although they are not currently unlocked with the software).

So honestly, what exactly are we left with? A slim form-factor, a new sleeker look, and a front-mounted trackball. To date, those are the only known differences/advantages/disadvantages.

The BES policies for VOIP, SIP, WLAN, etc. are applicable for their wifi-only device, the 7270.

yes but wouldn't rim make them for the 8800 as well? I can't see them not doing that.

assuming the 8800 supports wi-fi, which i don't personally believe it does. the only information surrounding the 8800 and wi-fi is information gathered by BG. i don't see it being included, but that's just my opinion - subject to change by a spec sheet.

interesting tho. a basic installation of BES 4.1.2 now gives the option for a WLAN-only environment (not really sure on the reasoning, but there's a lot of documentation to go with it). needless to say, a default installation/upgrade leaves all WLAN, VOIP, etc. policy changes to be applicable to handheld 4.0.0 and higher (7270). there is another SQL file called WLANTemplate.sql that has everything applicable to 4.2.0 and higher (no updates for the 7270, so who knows); this is now listed as WLAN Configuration just above the IT Policy option. Not really sure what it's applicable to, though. Could be the 8800, might not be.

i do know they've been testing the wElectron (8700-style upgrade for the 7270), although i've heard nothing publically about it. it would not be a Wi-Fi/GSM device, though.

IMO, if the 8800 is not going to have Wifi, there's not much reason to ditch my 8700 for one, especially with OS 4.2 coming soon.

I don't know if the trackball is necessarily an advantage. I've been toying with the Pearl and even though it can be adjusted to.. my preference remains the trackwheel.

Most of us are used to the trackwheel; I personally feel that the longer one of us has been using the wheel, the longer it'll take to get used to the change. I think those users who've never handled a BlackBerry will find it surprisingly easy to get used to (assuming they don't have it on the highest sensitivity level). The trackball will definitely give way to better application development, more functionality within those applications, etc. Not only was it supposedly necessary to slim the device in design and style, but it was also needed to broaden the functionality of the handheld as a whole, from an application development and device usability perspective.

I've had BBs since the 950. Certainly I am used to the classic trackwheel. I am totally used to the 8100 "Pearl" trackball. In fact, when I picked up an 8700 to help someone yesterday, I went straight for the trackball and NOT the trackwheel. We can adapt to anything

Can't agree more. I've had a BB since they first came out. I got used to the trackball right away and am so glad they changed to it. I never thought they would make a change as drastic as that but I really think it was for the best.

The first couple of days, my right thumb wandered over to the side of my 8100 out of habit, but it was a quick adjustment. Funny thing is, I discovered my 7100t was still powered on in my desk drawer, when I attempted to power it off, I went "deer in the headlights" for a couple of seconds, looking for a trackball on it.
