Is it a requirement that you do it on the Mac? How about doing it online with a ringtone maker website?
I've used this one before, its great.

Default How about GarageBand?

GarageBand comes stock with new Macs, and works well enough. Just start a new project (music project or podcast), drag an mp3 from the media browser onto the track list, drag the edges of the file to crop the song to where you want the endpoints to be (and add other effects, like fades, if you want), then Choose "Export to Disk" or "Export to iTunes" from the Share menu, select the MP3 encoder, and set your compression settings as you see fit. Then just transfer to your phone using one of the sync options in MissingSync (Folder Sync or Music, depending on how you saved the new ringtone).

Are you running and Intel Mac? If so use Parallels or BootCamp, honestly and it pains me to say it but the tools and options are vastly superior for the PC to create ring tones.

I actually use Quicktime Pro to cut out a song and make it smaller then use itunes to convert it. its probably the longest process of anything else here but it works pretty good. and you can get a good high quality tone.

Default Audacity

Audacity is a free waveform editor that you can cut any song and save it as a MP3 witch work fine as ring tones. I usually put the files one one of those free file hosting sites and OTA download.

You can use audacity to cut the tune you like to the section you want for your ringtone and save it, the only problem is enabling .mp3 saving, which is simple to update, then you can do it all in one easy programme.

However you'll need to get them on to you blackberry and for that I use my old PC, however don't ask me about this bit as I'm a new blackberry user, I have, however, been creating ringtones for a long time!

Just a quick note on ringtones via Mac- in order to save a cropped mp3 tune with Audacity you the program requires that you find and install the LameLib file which I have not yet been able to find and use. As an alternative crop your file export it to desktop as a wav file then import to iTunes as an mp3 (if you cannot import and convert at same time just import it the go to Advanced-Convet selection to mp3) When done export it to desktop so its easy to find for transfer. This sounds like alot but its quick as he_l on the mac and im using a powerbook G4.

The lame library file can be found here for Audacity 1.2.6 : Download LameLib
simply download throw it in a folder somewhere then when you attempt to export the .mp3 format tell Audacity where it is. Instructions are on the site.

I personally have been using Audacity for all my ringtone needs for quite a while and it works well. Just my two cents.

I've been using Amadeus II for the last year, its the closest thing to Cool Edit Pro I could find since making the switch to Macs. It works great and is fairly easy to learn to use if you don't mind paying for it, I use it for other besides ringtones also so it was worth it for me.

Audacity is good, but for cropping accurately Wavelab Lite is better.
Both are available for Mac & PC
