Default Problems with my new Tour (already)

Please Login to Remove!

So I decided to get myself a new toy today, in the form of the Blackberry Tour! I have 2 lines, one for personal use on at&t and one for Business on VZW. Currently I'm using the iphone 3gs as my personal device, switched it from a Bold a couple of weeks ago because of massive restart issues with the BB Bold. So fast foward and imagine my joy when it came time to get rid of my 8830 and jump to the refreshed Tour. Well I picked it up this afternoon, no lines, no wait, none of that at all. I must say, it's built very well, and feels great in the hand. Better then both the Bold and the 8900. I happen to really like the whole rubber, black chrome, carbon fiber batter door scheme that it has going on! All in all, a really cool looking device. The Camera is great too, just as good as the 8900, which takes really good pics! That's the good news, now the bad! This thing is lag city!!! The trackball is not nearly as responsive as past devices, and I've used all that came with the trackball. Just not snappy when moving around at all, apps don't open as fast as past devices either, which for me is annoying. That is all nothing compared to when I started making phone calls...

After hearing 5 people tell me I sound like I have a towel over my head, I decided it was just not meant to be. I must say I'm pretty bummed about this. Especially because It's a CDMA device on VZW. And in all my years being with them, I've never experienced bad call quality. Thinking it might just be my device, I called my buddy at VZW, and he did a test call to me from the store unit. Bad news, same issue with the call quality, which surprised even him. So with that being said, My Tour is going back tomorrow. My contract is up, and I will be canceling with VZW. They have no other phones that I am interested in, so there is really no point in keeping an out dated 8830 that has no camera or video for that fact. Might just port the number to at&t and pick up an 8900, and have both lines running on at&t. I must say I'm pretty disappointed, because it's a real nice device. But Call quality and a snappy os is what I like, in addition to a great email warrior. All I can say is I tried, and not happy at all with the outcome!

That's just the opposite if what I experienced using it at the vzw store. Trackball was very responsive, more than my Curve, and apps opened very fast, faster than my Curve also. Also I've read that a new device gets faster after it's been used for a little while. Maybe you got a bum device. I'd try a different one before making a final decision.

Aren't brand new BB's sort of slow until they get their memory organized. IIRC, it takes a couple days? But I have been experiencing the same things that sean76 points out. Might be worth trying for a couple more days?

I had been having issues with my Curve with people telling me I sounded muffled.

So far today in probably an hours worth of telephone, no one has said a word. Also, the Tour is VERY loud in the earpiece and SUPERB on Bluetooth. I have always had issues with hearing people on my headsets. All headsets. Today I was about blown out of the water by the volume at 3/4 of the way up. Comfortable talking while driving and the volume was below 1/2 on the Tour. That would have been all the way up on my Curve.

Love it love it love it so far!

I have also noted that it is louder through my BT than the 8330 was.
My brother says he hears me just fine also.

sean76, try changing your trackball sensitivity from 70 to 80. Made a huge difference for me.

Similar lag issues here. It's kind of like when norton used to run in the background and bring your PC to it's knees ("used to"???). Anyway, several times today everything just freezes up for a few seconds every so often. Also, agree the sensitivity is too loose. Took me forever setting up my ringtones... kept overshooting my selections. Already changed both sensitivities to 80. Not sure I notice a difference yet.

Overall, I agree to give it a couple days on the lagging issue. Haven't used the phone enough to judge the call quality. Will test that plenty tomorrow with a few conference calls.

Good luck OP.

I might just do a swap tomorrow, depends on if they have any in stock at the store. As for getting faster as the days go on, Yes, I have had that happen with the 8800 series and the Curve series, not the Bold though! It was pretty quick and snappy out of the box. Battery life took a couple of charges to get strong, but that's it. If that was the only thing, I'd probably hold on to this unit. But the muffled voice quality is not something I can chance, especially on a business line. We'll see tomorrow! Also, the battery cover has become a little loose after just one day of moderate use. Not a deal killer at all. But Rim should really take some pointers from the 8700 series, that thing was a tank, never moved one bit. One more shot may be in the cards for me.

PS... My friend picked up the Sprint model today, and says it's a serious beast. After one full charge and a full day's worth of heavy use, he's saying he's not even at the 60% mark... that's impressive, because this guys on his phone all day checking ebay, texting, talking, u name it. And he called me from it, and it sounded like a house line. Also he says no moving parts of any sort, including the battery door. Lucky Guy!

My hope is that as OS improves, we will see better effectiveness. My issue is network connection

I have had mine since 10am this morning. This is very fast comparied to my Curve, or Storm. Call quality if very good, no problems either way. Amount of memory is great also. Maybe you got a bad one, who knows.

Only issue I have had is that since this is a new phone and I am running off of Mac, the "PocketMac" app has not updated their software yet. So had to pull out the old PC and download from the old BB to the PC to the new PC......what a day....so far so good after that little issue

I have found my Tour to be perfect aside from the loose battery cover "Cheap Plastic" .. It feels good in the hand and makes amazing voice calls. I am very happy with it.

I've moved your previous non-related post in this thread to its own separate thread, for your issue. Please don't post that topic in this thread again.

Has anyone else had issues with the CD that came in the box?

The autostart doesn't work. When you open it, the "Blackberry User Tools" screen opens in blank gray and then sits there.

I can access the user manual and other content directly. I installed DM 5 on my laptop no problem from the folder. Then I get to work today and when I try to do the same thing I get "The installation files cannot be validated. Please verify the installer package and try again".

FYI - I am running Vista 32bit SP 1 on both machines.

And as a final FYI - I copied the files to my computer and ran the setup program from there and all is well. I am going to copy the whole CD over and see what happens.

And the data from the CD copied to the computer had no effect on the autorun. Still hangs.

This, of course, is not a big issue. But, wondering if anyone else had it.

Some thoughts after spending a day with the Tour

Dump anything from verizon you won't use. Do the standard tweaks to free up memory and pull the battery to reboot.

Change to the percision theme

Install any apps you need and again reboot. Get a good full charge. So far it's been running like a champ.

Now my Menu (BB logo) keep seems a little flacky and often gives me the app launcher vs. full screen view. Could be VZW sent me a seed device and retail is a little different.

Also the screen resolution is tight. I actually had to turn down the font size as it's just huge by default.
