Default New BBX OS may be a Problem

Please Login to Remove!

The new Rim Operating System BBX may have problems for internet applications. This OS is based on QNX which is a real time OS and has a microkernel architecture. The problem with microkernels is that while it makes it easier to add new features and services, it has performance limitations compared to the monolithic kernel which is used by Linux, Microsoft Windows and Apple.
In a demanding network application like the Internet can be, this performance handicap of the microkernel architecture will cause delays and service stoppages. When you have parallel processing (multicore), multiuser, multitasking, multiapplication, multinetworking etc like the present network environment a monolithic kernel is essential for performance reasons. The load is too heavy for microkernels.

The product is not available yet. The QNX OS to be used is already available in the Playbook Tablet which has received uniformly bad reviews. Just looking at the principles on which the QNX OS is based shows some flaws which I explained in my original post. No other company is using this type of OS because it has serious shortcomings which must be overcome before it can be used in demanding network applications. Other companies started using this type of OS but abandoned it because it lacked power.

Did you come here to be a troll? You are very misinformed.

QNX is a very powerful OS.
Operating Systems
And is used in a lot of technologies besides the PlayBook.

And in all fairness although the PlayBook was slated for not having "user email" apps etc. the hardware and OS speed was uniformly praised and easily beat the iPad and other tablets in brower speed tests. Sexport, I think you need to get your trolling head out of your arse and get your facts straight.

The ones he has stock in?

I'm at devcon and saw a PB run an html5 webgl 3d game. Didn't see anyevidence of performance issues.

The OP's text sounds like a copy/paste job from somewhere else...

Maybe here:
New BBX OS may be a Problem | Blog This Phone. Everything about cell phones
or here...
New BBX OS may be a Problem | Blog This Phone. Everything about cell phones

Fishy. Maybe the OP is a spammer in disguise?

Troll? Just because I wrote of a RIM product that has problems? The company could face bankruptcy if it is not careful. There is little room for errors in this game.
No I am not misinformed. You dont understand, that's the problem.
QNX is optimized for embedded applications. It IS powerful in that application, although it's reputation for reliability is over-rated.
The internet is not an embedded application. It has very diverse applications. QNX is not adequately addressing this. As I said, it's a single application operating system. From what I read, RIM does not even understand what these diverse applications are.

Well, you're the expert, so I guess we'll have to believe you.

Should I go ahead and ditch my BB?

"My other Blackberry is a Playbook"=My other Ford is a Edsel.

Carriers are dropping the Playbook. customers are not buying it, RIM is slashing prices and may even drop it, reviewers are calling it a dud and your Playbook is a BMW to you?

There are many performance issues. A embedded-based OS like QNX will have many issues that are easy to predict if you know OS theory.
