Since the 8100 is geared to the prosumer and less likely the business professional, what are the chances we could see unlimited text messaging added to the BB unlimited add-on? Why have to pay for SMS on BB and not on SK3? Any thoughts from those who know?

it is the same as the sidekick, isnt unlimited blackberry BIS plan on t-mobile $29/month with no voice?? and $19/month with voice just like sidekick?

what about cingular? wtf is up with 10 cents a text or having to purchase 1000 or more so you dont get that charge. im hoping hwne i get that BB i can get the other aftermarket software like IM+ or whatever free one to work on my BB and IM (text) for free. pisses me off when they say unlimited data and then you find out you got a extra $15 charge for overage on sms text. not cool.


isnt sms through the phone.. and IM through the internet using data? why get charged then?

He's not talking about the pricing, he's talking about SMS messages not being included in the BB data plan but they are included in SK plans.

SMS messages are actually processed by a third-party (most carriers use the same provider), which is the reason for a portion of the charges. With that said, ALL BlackBerry devices come enabled with the option to send SMS over GPRS. When the 7100 was first released (which was the first to have the Oz SMS-based IM client), this option WAS allowed. At some point, it started being rejected. Calls to T-Mobile supported resulted in the conclusion (based on offline discussions with T-Mobile reps) that it was a billing issue (SMS messages, which carriers can make a fortune from with its rise in popularity and archaic pricing structures, could not be charged if converted to data). There were no known technical reasons why this functionality was not supported. I'm not sure about other carriers though.

If RIM gets their AIM client out, and enough people migrate to the 8100 (and they could, if it's done just right), then SMS will be irrelevent really, since everyone could just send PIN messages. The 8100 and others are really going to redefine the consumer market.

One cannot deny that Blackberry is hot right now (just look at all the celebs that carry them now). It's going to get red hot very soon.

AIM + MSN, and possibly a converged IM client will really put RIM ahead in that market. They have one of the best IM clients available, anywhere (for Yahoo, that is).

Completely agree. The AIM thing really needs to happen if they want the average consumer. No one wants to go finding the right AIM client, buying it, downloading it, installing it, setting it up, checking the TCP settings, its a *****. They release AIM like they did with Yahoo and all hell will break loose, people will break thru the glass to get the AIM on the BlackBizzle
