Default Comparison: DVD Nav to Telenav or other Voice GPS systems

Please Login to Remove!

This thread is only to compare on board DVD GPS systems to BB Voice systems like Telenav or Wayfinder.

Some questions to ponder.

We all know that you need cell reception to get maps on the BB. But I think there are advantages to TN.

Maps are always up to date.
Traffic is provided - most DVD systems don't have that.
Entering locations on the DVD systems can be clumsy - first you have to find the street, and then the POI if its a hotel say. On some you cant directly enter the street number.

What else to people observe?

The biggie with me is the large difference in up-to-date maps. My on-board GPS would cost me $300 to update the mapping CDs to the 2006 level. I am currently running a 2002 edition in the vehicle, which doesn't include paved highways built new in the 10 years prior to the 2002 release.

Telenav has all the updates, including highways built last year and even re-alignments to existing highways.

However--I do notice TeleNav is slightly slower to update my position at times, compared to my on-board system. Note I said "at times", not all of the time. Overall, I would use TeleNav when in an unfamiliar area, depending on their ability to be current with the roadways.

So do all DVD systems lack the ability to put in a house number or street address unless its on the DVD?

The one factory installed in my Expedition is CD based. I can input the house number and street, city, etc., or intersection to travel to, as well as lookup places of interest (hotels, city centers, airports, etc.).

You are always limited by the information available to the map. I've used PPC based systems for years. It used to cost me around $100/year to get new maps, which were usually 6-12 months behind anyways.

Telenav is not so great either when it comes to adding locations to their map database. It will always be better than a dedicated system where you have to pay for a new DVD, but they can be very slow in updating. I have 2 relatives who moved to new neighborhoods over a year ago, and neither of their streets are in TeleNav's database yet. I have entered their addresses on TeleNav's website over 6 months ago, but it still can't find their addresses. And these are large neighborhoods with a couple of hundred houses!

To make it worse, TeleNav will not even let me enter their locations by clicking on "Record Location" from the Tools menu. It gives me an error message saying Location not found.

are these neighborhoods on google maps or mapquest or anything? I moved into a new development (small, 10 houses) 2 years ago and I still have to give directions to people because my address isn't in any map database yet.

It's not Telenav's fault. They get the data from Navteq. Go to Navteq's web site. You can request corrections. Navteq will actually dispatch humans to check it out. May take a while, dependign where they are with their quarterly release.

The BB internet download based systems are much slower to recalculate.

The fact that it requires cell reception is a large downside, most of the times that I would like a gps I'm in an area with little to no reception. The microsd cards are large enough now to hold the map data on the device.

It actually was Navteq's web site where I entered these addresses. I misremembered it as being TeleNav. And to the previous post, none of the other mapping apps have these addresses either, because they all get their data from Navteq.

Navteq will get to them. When you think of the sheer volume of work for all those onsite inspections, it's a wonder that the maps are that accurate.

As I noted in another thread... phone and gps switching is more difficult (obviously) than separate devices. On the other hand, the integrated dialing between Telenav and the phone is very useful as well.

Mapquest Navigator uses Telmap for their map data. Anyone tried this for mapping the new neighborhoods? Also Mapquest downloads *a corridor of information* for the routedata and stores it on the device, claiming that as long as you stay on route you need not access the network for additional data. Hence making this a very viable option to standard built in map systems.

I don't use an onboard system but a Garmin Nuvi instead. It is OUTSTANDING! Whether or not you can enter a number is dependent on the software. If my Garmin doesn't recognize the street number he'll give me choices that let me get close.

I received my first map update free and now to update it is under $100. Not bad in my opinion. That's cheaper than the $10 per month VZnavigator charges and I don't need a cell tower. It is very fast and accurate. Navigation on the phone is very nice and handy but I don't think it quite compares to a full fledged GPS unit.

As decent dedicated voice GPS units can be found for approximately $150 this holiday season, the monthly subscription models such as telenav that require data connections become less and less attractive.

Agreed. The biggest downfalls for me were...

Speed of generating and downloading maps
No data downloads if on phone calls
No voice prompt if on phone calls
No data downloads if out of area
Runs down phone battery quickly
Interface not as refined as my Garmin

With that said, it is convenient but not enough to justify $10 per month. It's worth more like $5 per month....

These cheaper units ($150)...do they name freeways/streets, or do they just do the "Turn right" and "Turn left" variety of direction?

I'm using an older version of Mapquest and it will name freeways, but doesn't name streets...
