Default Curve 8330 Google Maps GPS support

Please Login to Remove!

I have read that Google Maps can make use of the phone's GPS system. I have Google Maps 2.2.0 on my BB Curve 8330 but I have no way of seeing how to make Google Maps use my GPS. Anyone has more information about this?

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

It is using what some refer to as cell phone triangulation. You are centered to where the nearest cell tower is located from your device.

Yea I know but some folks say it is supporting GPS now in addition to tower triang.

It support GPS if you are using a BT puck which is sold separately from your 8330 (sigh). That is what I'm using at this time and it works fine. Now if VZW would just stop crippling their phones and al will be well.

Default You don't need an external GPS for Sprint's 8330

I read that GPSed will enable your GPS for other applications. I installed it when I first got my Sprint 8330, and I am able to use the phone's GPS with every application I've tried including Google Maps. Presumably, once the GPS is enabled, you can delete GPSed. However, I left it installed, though I don't use it. I believe this only works with Sprint's 8330.

I just intalled GPSed and it looks great. I can't connect to any sats because I'm inside a library but google maps seems to be making use of GPSed (google maps can find my location if GPSed is running and unable to find sats). Can't wait to test it out when I finish work.

Good news! You don't need GPSed running to use other GPS apps. You only need to run it once. At least that has been my experience. Good luck.

Really? When I used GPSed google maps used GPS. When I turned off GPSed, google maps went back to tower trig. Humm... I will need to play around more with it tomorrow.

So aside from the initial download, there is not cost or other data associated with using the GPS function of the 8330?

Just downloaded the app and configured it although automatic uploading of track data is turned off. Reading over the FAQ, it appears that it will save track data to the memory card for manual uploading if necessary.

The display shows 10 satellites and "Tracking OK" and a test email sent with my position is nearly dead on to my location. Guess that means the GPS functionality is working okay?

Depends.. Example: t-mobile makes you pay a few bucks more for the GPS (for other bb since they don't carry the 8330). Sprint includes free gps in there Simply everything plan.

In any case, after you have GPS support, you can do anything with it without worring about additional charges.

There is no cost for using GPS. The one exception is Verizon as you need to pay them for the VZ Nav app if you want to use your built-in GPS receiver.

Your GPS application may or may not have costs associated with it.

Interesting, so if T-Mobile charges $10 a month for the GPS that is only for using the NAv app? A person from T-Mobile can use their GPS with a 3-party app without having to pay the extra $10 bucks???

GPSed is way cool! Downloaded the app and did my first track on my way to work this morning. Punched in a few waypoints (didn't try any pics) and uploaded from my Mac (just copied over the wire rather than messing with Bluetooth or uploads over the air to GPSed.com).

Very very cool app.

I'm using gmaps on a 8330 and it uses the internal GPS just fine. Its been as accurate as up to 5meters, like 16 feet.

I had to go into options and enable GPS Location services or something before it did, else it'll use triangulation

Your profile shows a T-Mobile 8320. Time to update it?

Yup, my Sprint 8330 works fine with GPS. Like MrPG just said, you gotta make sure you set your permissions to allow use of GPS.

I have 2 BB's actually 3 but ya 8320 & 8800(business) and 8320(personal) a little overkill I know, I'm working on it. The *20 is my fav, in my environment I find wifi invaluable.

It does have GPS, but you have to subscribe to VZ Navigator for it to work.

Well, that would be because you have Sprint, and Sprint doesn't block application access to the GPS chip. All you have to do is turn it on in device (so it says "Location On" instead of "911 only").
