Hello -

Can someone tell me how I can disable the GPS on my 8820 so my phone's location cannot be tracked by my employer?

I don't really have anything to hide, but figure where I go on the weekends is my business, and - unless I'm using the GPS for directions - I would like to be able to turn it off.

I've looked and looked, but can't find anything on this.

If you are that worried, remove the battery or leave the blackberry in your desk drawer. But seriously, until someone comes with the exact answer, take a look at the help on the blackberry itself. I bet the instruction is there. Also look in options on the blackberry, anything there to do with GPS.

any time the phone is used you can theoretically be tracked. SMS/MMS/Emails/Calls/GPS. GPS is just more accurate than the rest, though they can get you within a reasonable distance by the rest

At this time as far as I know

ATT doesn't offer a service in which the employer can track the location of the device. Last I heard anyway

only way it can be tracked is by court order or you dial 911.

If it is companies device they have the right to track it

From what I understand, I know it's not the employer but everytime your BB conects to the network, every few seconds it can be tracked.

Is not that the case with any recently made cell phone in the US? I thought the federal government made the companies include the 911 function on all cell phones.

E911 GPS is always active as long as the phone is on.

As stated earlier, if the phone belongs to the company and especially if they are paying the bill, then they have the right to track it and if you're on BES there are probably measures that would prevent you from turning it off anyway.

When I had an 8830 on Verizon, I was able to go to Options->Advanced Options ->GPS and select 911 or Location (selecting it to 911 would prevent applications from using the GPS - not that they didn't have it locked anyway, but that's another story). I don't know if the same is true with the 8820, since switching over to AT&T I opted for the 8310.

I'm sure if I gave any incorrect information, someone will correct me (hopefully!)

I would leave it either battery-less or cased in lead-lined box at weekends if I don't want employers to track me. In reality, however, I wouldn't use my business bb for personal stuff at all.
