It used to be that the Device Manager needed to be installed and the driver working so the BB would be supplied with a normal charge current from a PC's USB port.

Is this still the case now we have disk mode? And does disk mode work with no RIM software installed on the PC?

Never needed the software myself to charge on my laptop when out of the office.

I've found that without the software many times my BB won't charge. However, the microSD card will show in any machine.

I need to have the BB software installed in order to charge my curve via my laptop. Though JC is correct the unit still shows up as a mass storage device

You do not need the blackberry desktop software to charge your bb.

with the bb connected (easiest), run microsoft/windows update and install the optional rim driver.

your system will then charge your blackberry.

That is also correct. The drivers are what are really required. However, the drivers are normally installed with Desktop Manager.
