Default Possible issue on SMS Alerts

Please Login to Remove!

Hi guys, I have a question and hope you can help or lead in the correct direction. I work for a large company and we are moving from Smartphones (Nokia, Blackjacks etc) to Blackberry's by Aug. I am the Smartphone Admin and will be including Blackberrys also. When a SMS alert is sent to the admins. Is it SMS or Pin and is there any lags on receiving them. Are they sent quickly. An Enterprise Server is being built as we speak.

Thanks in
Advance

SMS is SMS
PIN is PIN

The arrive as fast as your carrier delivers them.

But I thought it went from server to RIM to admin device. I spoke to AT&T and they said if you have an Enterprise Server, it would not go through them.

PIN is device-to-device as direct as it can be - SMS goes through servers & queues.

Eh. PINs still go through RIMs NOC. But yes, SMS' go through your carrier's SMSC and (possibly) another carriers.... Though not quite direct 'device to device' I would agree that a PIN (or BB Messenger) is about direct as you can get. Plus you get message delivery and read confirmation.

So you are saying it is better to get a Pin message for alerts instead of SMS. My question is, SMS is not sent imeditedly, to the BB being it goes through the carrier. Would it be better to set up the server to send via pin instead? I am asking because, my manager wanted to know which would be faster regarding alerts.

I think 99% of the time it is going to be a wash. Carrier SMSCs are usually pretty reliable a provide near instant delivery of SMS'. At the same time RIM's NOC is pretty reliable most of the time too, though remember you can't get a PIN if you only have GSM coverage where as you can get an SMS.
