Question does mail get routed through srp.eu.blackberry.net?

Please Login to Remove!

I have always understood that one of the fundamental security issues with BlackBerry is that the email get routed through srp.eu.blackberry.net (or whatever srp address you have setup).

Is this still true?

If so, could someone explain the data flow, does it go...

blackberry_handheld --> BES --> srp.eu.blackberry.net --> service provider (i.e.O2/Vodafone) --> mail_recipient

...or what way does it work? or if Im completely wrong, then what is the point of the srp and what role does it play in the whole setup?

Thanks,

Mail does not get routed to the SRP. Data is transmitted to it. Think of it this mail. Mail is routed via mail servers. BES "synchronizes" your mailbox with your handheld by transmitting the encrypted data to the SRP.

The actual data flow is:

Sending mail:

Device -> Carrier -> Srp -> BES -> Mailserver -> Recipient

Receving mail:

From mailserver (the BES polls it and grabs the email) -> BES -> SRP -> Carrier -> Handheld.

Hope this answers your query.

Just for clarification...
BES only polls for mail in a Domino or Groupwise environment. It does not poll for mail in an Exchange environment. Exchange uses a UDP notify packet sent from the Exchange server to BES to alert BES that there's new mail in the user's mailbox.
