You very well could have purchased an Evaluation Unit, which has special coding in the hardware that prevents it from being used in certain ways, for example, upgrading the firmware to a higher version than 4.2.
please explain more

Thumbs up

Dear Guys,

Last time I have the same problem, tried with Google and found some solutions,

Follow this,

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Unable to connect to the BlackBerry smartphone during a multistage loading operation

Problem
The following error appears when Application Loader is used:

Unable to complete the loading operation. Unable to connect to the handheld during a multistage loading operation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cause
There are multiple causes for this issue.

There is insufficient power for the loading operation to complete on the BlackBerry smartphone.
The connection between the USB port of the BlackBerry smartphone and the computer's USB port is unsustainable.
The USB drivers failed to initialize during BlackBerry smartphone initialization.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Resolution
Complete the following tasks:

Verify that the battery is inserted in the BlackBerry smartphone.
Verify that the battery is not faulty.
Turn off the Power Management option for the USB root hubs on the computer. For instructions, see the Additional Information section.
If a laptop computer is being used, make sure the computer is not connected to a docking station.
Make sure the BlackBerry smartphone is connected directly to the computer and not to a USB hub.
Disconnect all other USB devices (for instance, cameras) from the computer.
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to another USB port on the computer.
Turn off antivirus or firewall programs that are running on the computer. Turn the programs on again once a connection to the BlackBerry smartphone is established.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Information
To disable the Power Management option for the USB root hubs on the computer, complete the following steps:

Open the Control Panel by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel.
In the Control Panel, double-click System.
Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
In the Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click USB Root Hub and select Properties.
Select the Power Management tab and clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.
Repeat steps five and six for other entries named USB Root Hub.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this help, @ all
Lukas

I too am very interested to see if there is a solution. I've spent the last 3 days trying to upgrade my eBay bought 8100 to 4.5, from 4.2.x. Nothing works. I've tried the usual plethora of different versions, different vendor OS's (deleting vendor.xml first of course - and making sure no other vendor.xml files exist on the machine).

Have tried turning off everything first, even the latest "legit" OS from the phone's mobile vendor (O2 UK), nothing works. The second I try to put anything above 4.2.x on the phone it bricks, with a red flashing light to boot

And have tried the usual wiping, battery in-out techniques, nothing.

If anyone ever came across a solution I would be *very* interested indeed

Having the same problem with a storm (bought at a verizon store) all the fixes fail at the wait for device intialization step. Very annoying. Wiped with JL, then tried all the fixes, including the apploader from cmd prompt. Nothing has worked.

Which Storm did you buy because the Storm2 only has 1 available OS release to use no leaks no nothing yet.

If you are using the Storm1 and have this problem return it for a new you just got it so it must be under warranty

I would also update your profile to reflect the changes of your new device.

It's the wife's storm. I think I've got verizon sending a new one. It's still weird that it just keeps cycling. No amount of battery pulls, etc. seem to kill it. Is there a possibility its a battery problem, can't hold a charge etc?
