It's possible that when you change your number your device will have to be reprovisioned on the Verizon network (I think it's *228 or something close to that).
I support Sprint devices and when people change their number (usually because the device has a 'temp' number and I port over their actual cell number) they have to reprovision the device to get the BES email working again.
