Default 8330 Hybrid OS 5.0.0.328 - Tmo + games = a good, if tight, OS

Please Login to Remove!

So I decided I'd had it with the memory leak in 5.0.0.230, and I upgraded my 8330's OS to the hybrid 5.0.0.328.

Nathanix Blackberry Resource - Blackberry Curve 8330 OS 5.0 Installation

Memory leak gone, all was well there. But when I went back and edited the Blackberry.alx file to grab the new themes, it threw up at me and said I had no memory available. Turns out, if you go through and delete all the vendor codes from this alx file, it tries to install T-Mobile's Faves app as part of the Blackberry system files.

After I deleted T-Mobile's vendor entries from the Blackberry.alx file, I was then able to add the themes I wanted.

Then I decided to go grab the 4 free games for 5.0 (Klondike, some word game, Sudoku and Texas Hold Em) and install those:

8520 games/themes for the 8330 (addon/hybrid) (OS5.0) - BlackBerry Forums at CrackBerry.com

I ended up removing the word game and Texas Hold Em after trying those out. Sudoku and Klondike, I kept.

I'm humming along now, and happy. This is a solid build. But I will say that I don't have much memory left. And I didn't have that many 3rd party apps installed to start off with: a handful of Google apps, Evernote, SmartAlerts/BerryBuzz, Pandora, and KaGlom.

Going forward on 5.0, I can tell I will need to sit down and do some math before deciding to install anything new on the phone. I will regain some memory later this week, after I've tested the themes, by uninstalling all of them except my favorites. Even so, this OS is a tight fit.

If you uninstalled 5.0 because of the memory problem, I can recommend this hybrid for fixing that problem.

I uninstalled due to the device rebooting whilst on a call for ~45 mins. It happened consistently. Have you experienced that in the past or with this hybrid?

I did experience it in the past, yes. I haven't been on a 45-minute call yet since I installed this hybrid. However, my husband is in Morocco at present and is supposed to call me tonight. So, tomorrow I will be able to answer that question.

Sounds good. I look forward to your response. This is a deciding factor/deal breaker for me.

Forgot to answer this!

Call was 56 minutes, 12 seconds. No reboot. Will test again tonight.

I'm wondering if the memory leak was causing the reboots.

Thanks for the update!

That's good and promising news.

You make an interesting point about the reboots. Good possibility.

Default vendor.xml

Hi Guys trying to update my 8330 to the same o/s 5.0, but when It states to remove the vendor.xml. I cant find the vendor.xml i only find a file that goes under PkgDBCache.xml. is this the file or do I need to look somewhere else.
I last time I put on an o/s it was title up vendor.xml.

Thanks Andy

Make sure you install the OS to your PC first by double clicking on the .exe file.

No idea. Try checking here:

OS Beta/Hybrid Discussion! - BlackBerry Forums at CrackBerry.com

@jsconyers - no phone call reboots yet. I can't prove it's fixed, but so far, so good.

That's great news! I liked 5.0 while I had it minus the memory leaks and reboots. If those bugs are fixed in this hybrid I will install it. Probably not until next week as it looks like this is going to be a hectic week. Thanks for the updates!

Forgive perhaps a goofy question... what does ESN mean? I have an 8350 Nextel (I know, I know...) and would like to try out a 5.0 OS. I have updated my 8900 to 5.0.0.348 and love it!
Will this hybrid work on my Curve?

ESN = Electronic Serial Number. There are two versions of the 8330. Those being ESN and MEID.

No, you cannot load this OS onto your 8350. This OS will only work with the 8330 ESN. Nothing else.

I finally installed this today. It is a large install as Kathryn stated above. I would recommend following John Clark's Memory Optimization thread. I did and it helps a lot. I also added the games that Kathryn posted. I decided not to add the precision theme as I am not too interested in it. After the install I had about 32Mb free. After restoring my data and activating on the BES I am running around 20 Mb or so.

I may uninstall some of the games that I don't use, although I like to keep them around for when I have some downtime.

So far it doesn't seem too bad. .230 was very laggy, haven't experienced that with this yet. I am waiting to see if I have the reboot issue on a long phone call. I have made a few calls so far on this OS. None of them exceeding 30 minutes.

I will post back more of my findings after a few days running this OS.
