Default Yet another last last word on Verizon 8330 GPS?

Please Login to Remove!

Several threads and posters have indicated that for the 8330 Curve from Verizon, installing VZ Navigator and paying for the service will enable the hardware GPS for use by other programs, including Blackberry Maps, Google Maps, and various trackers.

Apparently, that's not the case - at least in my case, and according to the line I'm now getting from Verizon.

Per three layers of Verizon apologists, shelling out the big bucks for VZ Nav enables the 8330's hardware GPS FOR VZ NAV ONLY. It does not make it visible to other applications.

And that's what I'm experiencing, even keeping VZ Nav open while running other apps.

Needless to say, this sucks - if it's true.

Has anyone out there actually hands on experienced a fully-GPS-enabled Verizon 8330 using VZ Nav and another application?

FWIW, my OS is v4.3.0.127.

Thanks - Chris

where did you here that signing up for vz nav enables unrestricted use of GPS for 3rd party programs? Never heard of that.

Being new here, I can't post links yet, but there were several threads I ran into searching on Verizon 8330 GPS.

Wirelessly posted (8310; The Juggernaut)

Yes, there are several. For many, it works.

I'm clueless, since I've never attempted it; but I do remember reading someone posted that to use another app, VZNav has to be running at the same time as the alternate app.

Tried that. Doesn't work for my combination of hardware/software/carrier/eye color or whatever the significant variables are.

Since it does seem to work for some. anybody have a clue about what those significant variables might be besides model, carrier, OS?

Thanks - Chris

I'm not sure what to tell you. I have an 8330 on Verizon ,and since I got it as long as I have VZ Nav up and running AND using the satellites (follow me map works well) then I can use SOME other GPS programs. Not all work, but Google Maps does, as well as InstaMaps (GPS Tracker). Doing this causes extremely short battery life, but if I need to track my location for whatever reason I am able to.

Mine is a pre-release Curve on a Verizon-paid account, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I might be mistaken but GOOGLE MAPS does not use satellites to track your location but instead uses the surrounding cell phone towers to locate you within 1000 meters

It can use either, depending how you have it set up.

You're not going to find any fully GPS enabled VZW BB. That we can say for certain.

I can't speak for the 8330 but on my BB's Google Maps will use whatever is available to it. In other words, if GPS is available it will use GPS. If not, it will triangulate. There are orders of magnitude of difference in the accuracy of each (typically 3 meters for GPS and up to 2000 meters for triangulation).

Not to be nit-picky or anything, but the GPS satellites use triangulation to locate your position also. It is just a lot more accurate.

Any word on the lawsuit to get Verizon to unlock the Curve GPS???

This would solve all of our problems and eliminate the BT pucks that we have been using so we don't have to use that nasty VZNavigator.

There's a poster over at Crackberry who supposedly has a VZW BB which is fully GPS enabled (now granted he appears to have a special arrangement with verizon, but it does give us hope that it can be done)

In response to the OP, a few of us at Crackberry.com have had success using the VZ Navigator trick with MS Live Search.

With VZ Nav running using the "follow me map", I've used the GPS in both Google Maps and Windows Live Search. The only problem is, VZ Navigator has Voice-activated turn by turn directions and maps, so if you have already purchased VZ Nav, it makes Live Search and Google Maps useless.

Thanks for the suggestions. Having tried the ones I can, I can add just this:

With VZ Nav in Follow Me mode and having obtained an initial fix and at least one update, GPSed will track some of the time and Google Maps has picked up the GPS location exactly once (out of several dozen tries on several trips around much of California).

Maybe OS 4.5 will help, but I'm not holding my breath.

Next stop is a puck. Any favorites?

Thanks all.

It just sad that verizon charges for a function the bb can do already. Att does not charge. i have a ATT 8820 and 8310 i can downlaod and use varius gps softwares to the device and use for FREE. I'm prty usp set with the purchasing department at my job for working a deal to move use to Verizon from ATT. I support over 900 bb's currently and TBH we have never had a issue with ATT service or customer support.

I seem to remember from anotjher thread that GPS services should be set to Location On instead of 911. That is in advanced options then GPS. I have the freedom keychain 2000 which has been great. Cheaper than paying Verizon 10 bucks a month.
