Default service problem...maybe?

Please Login to Remove!

When my battery gets into the "red" zone, the service switches to "off", and it says "battery too low for radio use". It won't let me switch the service back on. This only happens a few moments before the battery dies. Its not too much of an inconvienence, I'm just wondering why it happens.

Because that is what it was designed to do. Exactly as the message says. The radio is turned off automatically to conserve what little power this is left to use the remaining functionality of the device. The designers appear to have made the decision to not give the user the choice to test whether there really is too little power for the radio or not.

Oh I understand now. I wasn't quite catching on to the wording of their message.

Thanks.

Also, letting your battery get that low can cause permanent damage to the battery.

Really? It goes that low maybe once a week, if not never.

Yes, Lithium Ion batteries can be damaged if the charge goes low enough.

Quote:
Depletion below the low-voltage threshold (2.4 to 2.8 V/cell, depending on chemistry) results in a dead battery which does not even appear to charge because the protection circuit (a type of electronic fuse) disables it.[78] This can be reversed in many modern batteries, especially single-cell ones, by applying a charging voltage for long enough to make the cell voltage rise above the low-voltage threshold; however this behaviour varies by manufacturer.

You shouldn't let a Lithium battery get below 20% as it can cause damage, especially if you are having this happen frequently. It is best to keep the battery topped up rather than let it run down.

Okay. Thanks for that little tip.

This has only happened twice to me in my 2 month use of this phone. Am I in any danger yet?

Not really, but it's best to avoid getting the battery this low unless there is no other alternative.

Sometimes it can be useful to carry a spare charged battery with you.

Check on eBAy or an phone store. IMHO, it is always best to get an OEM battery and not a knock-off. And make sure you get one for your specific model.

I don't think its worth me buying one, because this doesn't happen too often.

That's the test. Is it worth it to you to buy and carry a spare battery. I travel a lot, and I carry a wall charger and pack a car charger, and no spare battery. Just don't pack the wall charger in your checked luggage.

Why not? What have I missed from the TSA lately?
I usually try to pack the charger in the checked luggage because in my carry on they used to alway question all the wires.

I got stuck somewhere, waited and waited for my bag, ended up going to the hotel without it. It had been a long day and my battery was mostly spent. BlackBerry didn't see a charger again until I got home the following morning. But lesson learned. You may arrive and your bag doesn't, nor your toothbrush, nor your business clothes. So I not only don't put my charger in checked luggage, I don't check luggage anymore. That also keeps my bag from getting beat all to hell, or getting wet through, both of which have happened to me.

Ira's rule #7, if you can't carry it, don't bring it. If it won't fit in the carry on, leave it.
