My 8830 worked just fine with the X3 but cannot get the 8630 to pair. A sheet from BMW lists the models that are compatible with the 8630 and the X3 is not on that list. Suggestions???

Yes, my mistake; it is the 9630 that has the pairing problem. I understand it might not have the communications stack that is backward compatible.
