Have you done a battery pull lately?

How much free memory do you have?

Have a lot of data intensive apps running? A true battery pull is better than a software solution IMHO.

And please update your profile to show the model number rather than "TORCH" since there are several Torch models out now.

Some BlakBerry OS Versions are more stable than others. I'm running 9800/6.0.0.486. Its been good for about 45 days and battery pulls are getting more frequent. Just do a data backup using Desktop Manager first... Then reinstall the OS.

I use DM to install the same version (if I like it) it will say you have the latest version, and then I click on "Other Versions" and select the one I want. I also select the backup personal data option during the upgrade as well. The first backup is just "in case".

The phone will act like brand new again.... For a while ;)

^^ yeah, but the problem is, you shouldn't have to waste a couple hours of your life every month or two to make your phone work. I too have this issue and on more than one occasion my 9800 almost went flying out the window of a moving vehicle. Often, it will hang/freeze after receiving a message while on the phone, as soon as I hangup it's locked. One thing I've found that I think is the culprit are the purged emails. I think they stock up in the phone and slow things down, that's why after doing a reinstall it works smoother and slowly degrades...just my opinion. Any suggestions on that point I would love to hear. And to the point of data intensive apps, I've gone so far as to delete all apps and it still acted up until I did a fresh install

One of the resources that affects BB OS performace as much memory is the number of object handles. Keeping lots of messages, or running badly behaved applications can deplete the number of available object handles while there is still lots of memory available. The OS begins to behave as if memory is running out and starts running the garbage collector more frequently. Throw in applicatins that do too much on the event thread and you end up with a device that can go quite a long time without responding to user input.

From an OS design point of view, as BlackBerry has matured from what was essentially a single task OS, to a multi task OS with a single thread of execution disign decisions that made sence made many years ago will begin to have a negative impact under certain use conditions.

Interesting...I have 4 BIS accounts (all gmail) running on the phone, with one of them set to retain 90 days of mail, the others just 30 days. One thing I've noticed in Device/app management, is that in cpu and memory, when it's sluggish, it will show almost all resources going to "OTHER". I've never been able to figure out what "other" is.

My wife and I are having the same issues... we have 9800s running 6.0.0.600 and the phone will just stop. No reason. Just stop doing anything. Very obnoxious.

You are quite correct that you should not have to do this. There are some occasions when this becomes unfortunately necessary:
  1. When memory or object links get consumed by programs with resource leaks;
  2. When an installed program behaves badly and "runs wild" using up CPU and memory resources

I have only had to do this once on my 9800 because of reason 2, that program was promptly deleted.
