I don't believe that there is any way you can use your BB as a "modem" over WiFi. RIM just never bothered to build that functionality into the phone. I also don't believe you can do it on a WinMo device either.
A while back, I had a similar issue where something was hoaked up on one of my laptops' PCMCIA adapter and it would not "read" any cards, including my 802.11x WiFi card. I ended up getting a LinkSys USB 802.11g WiFi adapter. It worked like a charm, was recognized once drivers were installed in Windows XP, and instantly by Ubuntu (Atheros driver).
