My bad on the 8703. I was thinking of the 8707. Never used either one, but I know several folks who have traveled to Japan and used the specific 87xx model there successfully.

Yeah, I bought an unbranded 8707g in Guam just for Japan and Korea usage before the Bold series was out. It worked masterfully.

I used to have an 8707v (a special for Vodafone, I think) that worked in Japan. Now I use a T-Mobile 9700 unlocked with a UK O2 SIM. It works excellently there.

The rule I was told (and wiser heads can correct me if I'm wrong), is that you'll be OK in Japan with a 3G GSM handset.

Nippon and Korea are picky on the supported handsets. A random 3G handset doesn't necessarily guarantee a trouble-free roaming experience. We got enough horror stories to publish a book.
Your 9700 is probably one of the best current solutions. Stick with it.
