Default Tethering & T-mobile

Please Login to Remove!

Last night I was able to successfully configure my laptop to do the tethering thing. Not near as fast as I have at home, but it will be such a plus for where I am traveling to in a little over a week because I will have no internet access there at all. I'd really rather not have to sit there in a Panera Bread or a Starbucks to just check my work email.

That being said, I have a couple questions that I wasn't able to find an answer to specific to my carrier (T-mobile). I did search, but wasn't able to find an answer specific to T-mobile. If I missed it, I apologize and please send me the link!

I have an 8320 with the 1000 minutes family plan (2 BB's), unlimited texting, etc. and data plans for both (about $135-ish a month).

With the tethering...

While connected, will I be using my minutes?

OR

Are will there be other charges that will be incurred??

I am assuming I will not be able to place and receive calls while connected. Is this correct?

Is there anything else I should know?

I would really appreciate any info.

Thanks a bunch!

If you have T-Mobile's unlimited data you can tether all day long and won't go over.
If you receive a call while tethered don't answer or it will terminate the connection. Same goes if you make a call.

Just a quicknote...if you read the fine print on your bill...Data plan is "Unlimited" upto 1GB. So it's better to check you account online to see how much you have used it to be on the safe side.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the answers.

On another note, I decided to look up T-mobile's Terms of Service, and found that there are two right now.

One that came out in June of 2008, and then one that came out in December 2004.

The 2008 one states that tethering is prohibited? and that there is a 10gb limit on data usage??

On the June 2008 page, there is a link to the December 2004 Terms and Conditions, for those that signed up or renewed prior to June 28, 2008.

The December 2004 one (I renewed in April 2008) doesn't say anything about tethering, nor can I find a limit on data usage.

Now I'm really confused.

So what is it... Is tethering allowed or not for T-mobile?

Which Terms and conditions am I bound by?

Sorry to be such a pain, but now I am wondering if I should be doing this at all?

Thanks again for your help!

Tethering is not allowed on T-mobile or on AT&T they can terminate your account for that reason too.

You are bound by the most recent TOS

This is not correct AT ALL.

Tethering is allowed by at&t if you have the tethering add-on, and despite what their ToS says, T-Mobile does not care if you tether. They only care if you use excessive data (i.e., streaming porn or something like that). Further, they will not terminate you if you tether. You will likely be warned, and then possibly charged per kb, but terminated.

Tethering is allowed on Tmobile. Not extra plan necessary.

I have been using tmobile since 2007 and I can safely say they just haven't cared enough about tethering to talk to me about it. In 2007 I bought a blackberry and it was stolen. I replaced it with an iPhone and tethered that thing to no end. I also was using the tzones 5.99 package. That was stolen as well so i went back and forth between tmobile wings, nokia bar phones (w/ NO color) and various crappy devices till I bought my 8320 and tether w/ that and love it!

needless to say, with my netbook I tether often and a lot (this post is being made from a tethered phone) and tmobile has never contacted me about it.
