Default Battery? or Phone?

Please Login to Remove!

Tour #1: Charged up at night, drove to work the next day. 45 minute commute. By the time I got there, the phone was DOA. Totally.

Went to Verizon store, they tried to charge the battery, pronounced it dead, and said they weren't really sure what the problem was. So they gave me a new Tour. It took 2 hours of standing around while they got it going, but everything seems to be fine now.

Unreal... exchanged my Tour for a new one yesterday. With the basic changes, like reducing brightness and backlight time, this Tour is significantly better. However the scroll ball is horrible on this one. Let's pull it all together RIM.

Still no issues at all with mine, which I have owned since launch day. Today loads of emails in and out and phone has been on since 7.00 AM eastern-also plenty of phone calls including one for 23 minutes. Battery is still almost fully charged.

The only days I have trouble is when I have a lot of talk time. Seems like voice conversations gobble up battery BAD. I am thinking there is maybe 3-4 hours of talk time. They advertise 5 hours.

When I don't talk, the battery lasts wonderfully. I easily get two days or more out of it when I don't talk much. I have GPS on and usually leave BT on and just connect/disconnect the headset.

So, when I talk a lot, I expect to charge it!

My battery life is decent. I'm pretty heavy on SMS, very few MMS, some emailing, and limited web browsing. I can go about 1.5 days on a single charge (that is with it shut off from around 1AM-8AM). I normally don't have any apps running. I use facebook randomly throughout the day, but I'll close it. Don't really play games or use AIM. Mostly just BBM, SMS, email, and some web browsing (mainly on facebook).

No problems with my battery life... The 1st few days perhaps but once it gets on the cycle, I have had zero issues.. Lasts an entire day with moderate use and still is at about 60 to 70 percent at the end of the day...

How do you go about "dialing down" FB? Using it less frequently or did you edit the options?

Default BB Tour - what does a full battery look like

Dear Fellow BB Forums users,

I picked up the Tour last week and noticed something odd...in the morning when I wake up to pick up my tour it has...what I think to be a full charge but while it is still plugged in it does not show the "charging symbol" My question for you all is: what does YOUR Tour look like when it is fully charged? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

When mine is completely charged, I do NOT have the "charging symbol" or any other symbol on the battery icon.

Wirelessly posted

Todays use:
7am unplugged it
8-930- gym time (gym has no reception downstairs)
10- talked on phone via bluetooth for 10minutes.
Throughout the day I answered a few emails (3) and a few bbms (5).
I finally broswed the internet to post this. 12 hrs later its at 80%! It helps when you don't browse on your phone or bbm often.
I have gps enable, screen at 70%, network to global.

By now I was used to having my phone at 50%.

I'm going to throw my name out there as well. I got my Tour on Friday, notice that battery life was limited, but didn't really want to say anything until I gave it a few charges.

First real test (3rd charge): Unplug at 8 AM. Throughout the day I received about 75-80 emails, sent one or two, did a bit of reading. Read WSJ for about 3-4 articles worth (15 minutes). Checked the traffic on Google Maps. Had one quick Google Talk conversation. One 20 minute call. Had excellent coverage all day. Tried to configure Beejive - about 15 minutes of device use. By 8 PM, it was dead. Radio off. Similar use on my 8830 was probably around 30% by this time.

Other potentially battery draining applications:
UberTwitter set to check every 10 minutes
WSJ Reader running in the background
Google Talk running in the background
Google Maps running in the background
Google Voice running in the background
GPS on

I'm going to troubleshoot a bit and see if I can improve battery life. If I can't, I'm going to try to get a new device/battery. Today I'm going to run the same as before, but shut off GPS. I have a feeling that constantly trying to find me was causing some extra strain. I always wanted GPS, but not if it's going to kill the battery! Oh boy, WiFi is going to be fun.

I should be getting a Tour in a few days, so what does everyone suggest for the first few battery charges?

For new phones, I usually fully charge my phone out of the box, before activation. Is this good, bad, necessary?

Over the next few days, should I let the battery drain on the Tour before fully charging? I normally charge my phone every night before I go to bed regardless of how much battery is left.

I've had a 8830 and I currently use the Storm. I'm aware of dimming the screen and making sure I properly exit apps to increase battery life.

Thanks in advance.

No, do not let the battery drain completely. See here for tips.

What a difference a day makes (without GPS). The device was under similar load - 75 emails, sent one or two, read WSJ reader for 15 minutes, uploaded a picture through email, 40 minutes of talk, 20 on a wired headset. By 8 PM, I was around 45%. At midnight, I'm at 30%. I happened to not have Google Talk logged in for most of the day as well. Here were the other apps:

Other potentially battery draining applications:
Bluetooth on, not paired
UberTwitter set to check every 10 minutes
WSJ Reader running in the background
Google Maps running in the background
Google Voice running in the background
GPS off
BES policy set to do content protection, memory cleaning, strong encryption

The difference is substantial. I could probably go another few hours before getting critically low. Tomorrow I'm going to turn GPS back on and see how it treats me, just to see if I can get it to repeat the first awful performance.

More mixed results:

Similar load - 9 AM unplug, fully charged. 75 emails, sent one or two, read WSJ reader for 15 minutes, 40 minutes of talk. By 8 PM, I was getting battery low warnings. I shut the radio off and by 9 PM, the whole handset was drained. I think that UberTwitter was polling Twitter all day (and not getting results because of the DDOS Attack they suffered) so that may have caused it. I'm going to keep monitoring it. If I have one more 12 hour battery charge, I'm getting a new device (maybe it'll fix my loose battery door too)

Other potentially battery draining applications:
Bluetooth on, not paired
UberTwitter set to check every 10 minutes
WSJ Reader running in the background
Google Maps running in the background
Google Voice running in the background
GPS off
BES policy set to do content protection, memory cleaning, strong encryption

For those who have complained about battery life - does Verizon Wireless give you a whole new device, or just a new battery?

Unplug at 6am:
200 e-mail received, 20 sent out.
Mobipocket Reader = 30 min.
Browsing = 15 min
GPS = ON,
VZ Navigator = 1 hr
MyAlarm is running on background
No instant messaging (IM+ in Push Mode)
15 calls (short calls 2-3 min)

Plug back to charger at midnight with 30% battery indicator.

Before used 8830 - battery was a little bit better.
I think Tour battery is not so bad.

Dude, take it from me swap out the device. There are devices that have very good battery life and others that bite it. I know it makes no sense, but I know it's true. You should not have to turn off GPS.

I had a bad Tour, talked to Verizon and they finally believed me. Swap out the entire device.

How many people have swapped out devices and gotten much better battery life after the device swap?

I have been having worse battery performance than my 8830, and I did a battery swap at Verizon, and that seemed to have possibly helped a little, but not significantly. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to swap devices or not...

Default My battery life problem solved

A friend referred me to these forums. My new Tour BB was dying overnight as well. I would barely use it in the day and by 2am.. Dead Dead. Or even taking it off the charger at 7pm, going out for the night. Dead by morning. Yesterday took it back to the store. Got a new battery. Talked for an hour last night. Went to bed this am still 90% charged. Don't hesitate take it back and get a new battery.. cheers
