You would need to run one of the Windows Emulators on the MAC. My suggestion would be to find a friend that will let you use a PC for an hour.

Yes, you need to find a buddy with a PC and do it from there. RIM still has less love for the MAC

I have had many many problems trying to use an emulator and upgrading my phone. The best option, until RIM develops a Mac DM (doubtful), is to use PC.

No, not really.
Even when your carrier releases OS 4.5, you still won't be able to upgrade the OS on a Mac.
You'll need Windows.

Why wait?
It's available now. Upgrade now if you can.

I've upgraded 3 ATT 8310's on my iMac with Fusion/Windows with no problems. The only time I had a problem was when I used my wife's windows pc to upgrade her 8310.

You can get an OEM copy of Windows XP for $85 off of Newegg and then install it via Bootcamp.

I'm in the same boat. It's not worth spending $90 just for an hours of use every few months. We are getting rid of a couple 6 year old junk Compaq laptops and hopefully I can pick one of those up for my OS upgrade needs.
