Default BB 8310 Curve...Unable to install any 3rd party software

Please Login to Remove!

When i click device manager and then the app loader icon inside the small interface window. It opens another window which after a few steps that say things loading jvm etc. But then it comes to a windows which looks like the place where you add new apps. There is an add button on the top. But it gives an error no matter which ever .cod or .alx file that i try to add to that window.

Would appreciate some help.

Thanks

Is the device on BES now or has it been in the past?

What error code does it give?

To be frank i dont even know what BES is ?

What i did was run the application loader from within the Desktop Manager.

It opens a seperate window saying "welcome to the application loader wizard". I click next (other option is cancel so...). It asks for the device password. Once entered it shows reading JVM something and reading application status (too fast to read it...it doesnt wait for me). Next i land up in the Device Application Selection Screen. Inside the main box it shows "The blackberry desktop software doesn not have the BB device software for the device which you have connected to the computer. Contact Your wireless provider or system administrator". On the top there is an ADD button. The rest is all greyed out. I figured this add button will add the application to the empty field. So i click on add. It opens a window to browse my computers loactions and i choose the .cod file (even tried the .alx file as im new to BB and dont know why on earth there are 2 files for an appliaction) to install. Bith give an error box saying "No Applications Designed For Your Device Were Found". End of story. The only other option to click at this stage is the close button.

PS : By far the most finicky fone ive ever seen in a decade of dealing with PDA's. In fact the basic installation of the device software itself needed hacks and help from a forum of experts to setup. What a pathetic device. The main manual never tells us to go into the RIM filder and delete the vendor.xml file to enable updating the OS. If palm gives you an update. You just run it and it updates. You dont need to go in and hack files to enable it to work. I really like the way this phone looks and its weight but am depressed that its such a torture to use. In fact it will never even sync via bluetooth. Many forums and BB themselves confirm this. And everytime i connect the device it keeps on trying to sync on its own which is very irritating.

You seem to be having a LOT of problems.
Removing VENDOR.XML is not done by casual users. If you stick with Vodafone branded software, you never have to delete it.

99.9% of people don't have to touch the files. You see to be having a LOT of problems. I've read all of the threads.

Are you SURE you have followed the instructions TO THE LETTER on how to load the HANDHELD OS to your PC. Reread them and make sure you haven't missed a step.

Hi,

I bought this phone as unlocked. It only shows vodafone on the bootscreen. Else its just a normal phone right. Does an unlocked vodafone handset mean i cant install any 3rd party applications ?

Also about your last line...Im sure i followed the instructions to the word. I have also completed it successfully and my OS is now 4.5. I was just mentioning that incidentally. Also i uninstalled the device software from my pc as i thought thats needed only to update the OS on the phone and has nothing to do with the PC. When i go to add/remove programs the device software on my pc isnt there. Should i put it back on ?

Yes your right. Learning this phone is like learning a foreign language. I never knew the PHONE's OS should reside ALSO on the pc for the rest of the things to keep working everyday. In most phones once the rom chip is upgraded (firmware) then you dont need that patch lying on the system. Much less installed. Anyway, Should i reinstall the os patch software onto my pc and leave it there. Is that something that migh enable 3rd party apps to install/work ?

Thanks

Hi,

Looks like i solved it. My guess was right. The BB device software needs to be installed on the PC. Then i wonder why they call it DEVICE software. I thought the BB desktop manager was the only interaction software between the PC and the phone. However i have installed the DEVICE software which instists on being on the PC and im now able to install 3rd party apps.

I also want to clear one small doubt. When we download apps, there are mostly 2 files. One is a .cod and the other a .alx. Which is the main application file. .alx ?? Or .cod ???. Is the .cod a supplement file to the installation ?

Thanks

Miscommunication again. I mean my guess was right tat i have to reload back the device os software. I know you told me to follow the OS install to the letter and i did. But then later on removed it. So i guessed i have to put it back on. Hope that clears things.

Sorry i missed this post. And noticed it now only.

Plz read my first post where it was made well known to you that i was using the BB desktop manager and clicking the app loader icon within it. I think its a pretty clear description as to what i was doing and in which interface.

Ummm ... your OP said "device manager" which has nothing to do with installing applications.

You mustve been using this phone for years. Ive only had it for a few days. Im allowed that much leeway on jargon. . Plus its quite legible from the full description. Experts will know.

Go to a particular forum (in your case maybe the 8500 series section) and near the upper left is an option to start "new thread."

(At the top of the forum is a banner with UserCP | WAP | BlackBerryAPPSStore | Sponsors | etc. go to BlackBerryAPPS Store and look down for "new thread")
